Tombo is a without a doubt a quirky and relaxed poké and matcha bar; which is an excellent addition to the thriving food and drink scene that Fitzrovia now boasts. I tried this latest outpost of the Tombo success story and was whisked away into a dazzling Hello Kitty pop-up world. To be clear, on my visit Hello Kitty took centre stage amongst an authentic Japanese aesthetic featuring imported tea-ware and crockery. Hello Kitty is popping up until 8th October for those keen to indulged their open/well known or secret Hello Kitty love affair!

This summer saw poké established as one of the hottest new food trends in London. Tombo Fitzrovia is clearly bang on-trend and leading the pack with its new opening. An engaging spot to encourage solo or group dining with friends, colleagues or partners. The menu is packed full of options and allows you pick classics or for the more adventurous amongst you to create your own dish. Who doesn't love an interactive dining experience so 'Build Your Own Poké' is a great option.

Not to list off the menu as I highly recommend you head on over to Fitzrovia to sample your own poké bowl but choices include the Classic Poké, which combines Salmon or Tuna with Sesame Soy (gluten free), Spring Onion, Edamame, Sesame Seeds and Nori. The Soho favourite, Kaisen Poké, with Ponzu Citrus Soy, Salmon and Tuna, Edamame, Avocado and Nori.  For those who follow a vegan diet or prefer to eat meat there is the Tombo’s Vegan Special or Teriyaki Chicken Poké served on a bed of Rice or Courgette Noodles. The courgette noodles are textural sound with a satisfying crunch and a healthy alternative base ingredient. The tuna and salmon sashimi we tried was of the highest quality.

I obviously tried the Hello Kitty Poké with salmon on a base of black and white rice, sesame soy sauce, thinly sliced vegetables, edamame and my personal favorite edible flowers. How can you not smile when presented with delicate blooms in your plate. It even came with a souvenir Hello Kitty sauce pot to keep. What is therefore not to love? I was left feeling pleasantly full, the vegetable were crisp and fresh. The rice perfectly cooked and the salmon melt in the mouth.

I was advised by the super helpful team that a trip to the café is simply not complete without sampling one or two of their award-winning matcha teas. I was duly presented with a Hello Kitty Matcha Latte Hot. Hello Kitty had a vibrant green hue, not in the least over-powering, rather delicious and Kitty was smiling back at me! I also tried the Sakura - cherry blossom kukicha to end my meal. A big loose leaf tea fan I would be happy to add that to my collection.

In addition to the matcha lattes and teas, there is an array of delicious matcha desserts to indulge in - from soft serve ice cream and sundaes to Matcha Tarts and Cheesecakes. Back to the Hello Kitty menu we went and we had a delightfully light strawberry and cream dorayaki and hojicha berry sundae.

The freshness of the food and decor speak for themselves. Twinned with excellent service this is a poké spot to take notice of. Matcha fans will be in heaven and those new to the flavours of Poké and Matcha have the perfect springboard in which to discover the unknown.

Love this place - it's quiet and subtle, despite being in bustling Soho. Very fresh, good quality food, and creative matcha desserts. Love the build your own poké, too! Prices are reasonable and sauces are so tasty :)

Just look at these bowls of sunshine and deliciousness! It was really very difficult to whittle it down to one sauce, one ‘mix-in’ and two toppings. I started with a base of courgette noodles and added tuna, avocado (of course), spring onion, sahimi and crispy shallots with a ponzu soy on the side.
