L and I were headed to Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park this Friday night to watch Lift Festival’s Depart – an interactive circus performance through the underworld. Not knowing what to expect, we decided to hedge our bets and satisfy our stomachs with a good meal first. And so we kicked off the weekend at nearby Verdi’s Italian restaurant (as it turned out, Depart was brilliant and utterly mesmerising – it’s returning in 2017 so do see it if you can).
I don't know East London well, but Verdi's was well worth the trip. Spoilt for choice by the mains menu. I had grilled swordfish in a tomato sauce for mine. Delicious & the largest swordfish I've ever had - tasted very fresh. For starters I went for their small portion of tagliatelle bolognese - I was worried it might be too filling for a starter, but exactly right. The pasta was fresh, if a touch on the al dente side, but a really great dish. My friends also enjoyed scallops with samphire to start and another had calamari and courgette frite - an enormous deep fried dish. For main courses they had specials of fillet beef with mushroom sauce and spring onion and another had oven baked sea bass. The roast potatoes side is worth ordering and sharing between two - they are more baked little potatoes with skin on rather than traditional British roasties. For wine we enjoyed the Pinot Grigio, which slipped down nicely. We also tried their Rose special of the day, but I found this a bit corky/oaky. We would have liked more choice for desserts I.e some less creamy things too, as one of my friends had to pass on dessert for this reason. But I had a perfectly good chocolate mouse served in a glass ice cream type dish with raspberry coulis on top and another friend the classic tiramisu served in the same type of dish as the mousse. The service was very friendly and attentive, although there was one comedy moment when they tried to give me my friend's beef (covered in sauce) twice and said it was my swordfish! But no problem. Free limoncellos were also served to us at the end of the meal. Those living nearby are so lucky to have this as a local restaurant - where you can either go all out as we did with three courses and the more expensive fish and meat dishes, or go for some very reasonably priced and satisfying pizza and pasta meals for less than £20 with wine, depending on your mood or budget. I would certainly be popping in for their tagliatelle bolognese on a regular basis at less than £10 as a main course if I were local.
Stepney is not exactly over-endowed with restaurants, so Verdi's is a great find, although it would be a welcome addition to any neighbourhood! The food is regional Italian, and offers a relatively small menu of imaginative dishes, excellently cooked. On recent visits braised rabbit, pappardelle with lamb shank ragu, chicken in sage and white wine sauce, and fritto misto have all gone down well, and there are good pizzas as well. The atmosphere is pleasantly informal, with quiet jazz in the background. Friendly service too. Well worth a visit.
