I'm pleased to say that my review is in sharp contrast to that of the previous reviewer. As it happens, I'd never been to this pub before, even though for over 20 years I've lived ostensibly within walking distance. Not only do I not know the owner, but I even began by whingeing that I hate people calling me madam. Poor guy, how's he supposed to know? And then he was alright about it.
Anyway, we had lunch there. Two toasties and a sandwich, with sweet potato fries on the side. A pub lunch, plain and simple. Except that it way-exceeded my expectations and was utterly delicious, proving once more that good ingredients, well-prepared, make the finest food. Now we eat out a lot. Sometimes twice in a day, but we couldn't manage dinner after our impromptu lunchtime toasties. It was such a treat to go to a real pub, which even catered for the no-music-of-any-sort requirement of our pet professor. Nothing makes my nose wrinkle quicker than the label "gastro-pub" (especially it often means over-priced and under-good) - we are hard pressed to find ordinary, and finding out this well-done was manna (or toastie) from heaven.
Thank you for your hospitality, press on, we'd love to return :)))
Nice village pub with welcoming hosts, good beer and a delicious Italian sandwich . Barman Nick gave us great advice about local walks. Would recommend. Hoping to return for one of their Sunday jazz afternoons
Cutest English pub right on the sweetest village green in Combe. It is the perfect pub to rock up to for a lovely homemade food, ale and friendly staff. The sporadic live music on Sundays out the front really adds something to the whole atmosphere. No pretence or bravado, just good. It is about a half an hour walk through fields from the Combe side of Blenheim Palace Gardens.
