OK. I love real ale, so to me the place is paradise. 12 hand pumps of quality ale served bright and in excellent condition. So for me every visit is a mini beer festival. To cap off the experience, they have loyalty cards so every tenth pint you get one free!
They also have a number of ciders served by hand pump and for the craft beer enthusiast there's a large range on offer. I also spied a good selection of craft bottle beers.
There's also a comprehensive food menu. I can personally vouch for the Sunday roast, along with their pies being a little bit special.
As for ambiance, it's a classic traditional pub strongly supporting rugby. Harlequins home games and Internationals can be very busy, but in a good way! On normal days there is background music, and I mean background, which is provided by a record player and regulars who have donated their vinyl collections. Bar staff will take requests.
In the Summer there's an expansive garden, ideal for family occasions and the pub is very dog friendly. In the Winter there can be a heated marquee in the garden.
Lastly, there's the staff, who are very customer focussed, friendly, efficient and effective.
Pre rugby lunch, the place was packed and yet the service was excellent and the food (burger, fries) was first class. If craft beer is your thing then this is the place for you, incredible choice and a few ciders as well. We will return when there’s not a game on, this is somewhere to dwell over a pint...
Steak Night on Thursdays is a regular night out for me. I always get the fillet steak, which I prefer blue, and it's always great quality meat cooked exactly to my liking. At £13.50 for the fillet with all the trimmings and a glass of wine or pint included it's excellent value for money! The Sussex Arms is a cosy, traditional pub with a great atmosphere and friendly, helpful staff. I highly recommend it.
