If you want a pretentious pub where you need a dictionary to decipher the menu and tweezers to eat you food.....dont come here. If you want a warm friendly good old fashioned Country pub with a menu of traditional homecooked food(at reasonable prices) and well kept ale, then this is the place. Great sized garden for summer days and lovely open fire for the cold winter months. Recently refurbed to a high standard looking sleek and modern whilst keeping the Country Pub feel. Great owners and staff and an ecclectic mix of "Locals" who will interact amd make you feel welcome. If you want to eat...Book or be prepared to wait as this place gets packed, but the food is worth the wait! Ive been a patron here for 17yrs plus and have seen the evolution first hand from what was a good pub to what is now an excellent country pub that serves food. Try it,you wont be disappointed!
We had drinks and lunch at the Anglers Retreat today after a 9 mile canal walk in 30°! A very friendly pub, they happily gave me a pint of water, which I quickly followed with a pint of the Stowford Press Summer fruits cider, which was delicious. My husband enjoyed the Timothy Taylor Landlord beer. We ate lunch, which was served quickly and was really good. A huge amount of food too. We sat outside in the garden which was very relaxing after our long hot walk. We'll definitely be going there again!
Having driven past a few pubs in this area to discover they don't open at lunchtime I visited this one - for the first time in years - and walked into a vibrant lively place, unusual at 1.30 on a weekday. Very welcoming with an ambience a lot of pubs would 'die for'. Another plus was that the Timothy Taylor "Landlord" was superb. Call in, you will not be disappointed.
