Another lovely stay at the Cleveland Tontine celebrating a birthday. Although rather quiet 😏 we had the most relaxing stay.
The Cleveland Tontine is a special place for us both. We were truly looked after during this stay, all staff we encountered went above and beyond. Dinner on the evening was perfect and the food was lovely. The perfect relaxing birthday get away.
We will be back again soon.

Another fabulous trip to the Cleveland Tontine. Three of us had lunch in the lovely room beside the bar area. We were joined later by my nephew and sister in law for pudding and coffee. The new general manager (Marie) looked after us along with her staff. I cannot tell you how welcoming the staff were. Lunch was great.
What a little gem.
Staff were excellent or rather the manageress was. She did everything but cook. Professional, kind and considerate lady who took time to show us around the gems of this amazing old coaching inn. The chef is also deserving of a mention. Excellent presentation, excellent choice and very well executed food. Perfect.
This coaching inn was built in 1804 on the turnpike road from Thirsk to Yarm,
The history is fascinating including the name ‘tontine’.
This was an old concept, subsequently banned, whereby a group of investors bought into a building, upon death the other shares reverted to the remaining investors.
We cannot recommend this historical hotel highly enough. The decor is very ‘William Morris’ which we loved, our room was massive, as are the beds and our en-suite had a free standing roll top bath and separate shower. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Thank you
