Sheffield has an excellent variety of cafés and Homemade 'by Thelma's' is a perfect example. We found exciting fare, challenging the boundaries of the historic 20th century Yorkshire pallet. No pie and mash here, just adventurous and exotic fare... from Morocco, Lebanon and Asia, as well as Mediterranean influences from Italy and Spain.
A late lunch on 28-Jan with vegetarian and gluten-free options was a total success. The Moroccan Chick-Pea salad and Lebonese Rice were our reviewer's favourites. Dessert was quite a marvel - we particularly recommend the gluten-free chocolate and pear cake, with chocolate ganache and flaked almonds.
The Americano coffee deserves a medal, taken black, it was strong, not at all bitter and had a fresh, clean, aromatic finish.
By the way, a special 'thank you' to the couple who, just before we arrived, had beaten us to a table for four, and moved so that everyone could be seated.
And before we go, the service was superb, catering for all our special requests. We also noticed the staff handwashing all the dishes... bless them... maybe something about this café is 20th century!
Excellent food, great staff, friendly atmosphere.
Oh and the most delightful humous!
We went on Friday evening for bisto night. The food was lovely I had fried cheese coated in seeds which was absolutely delicious and then the fish which was lovely. We had both coeliacs and veggies in our party and they both had excellent choices. It's bring you own with a small corkage fee. The staff are very helpful and I will definitely be returning.
