In the mix of a late pandemic Hazel's Meze bar opens to the public in April 2021. Due to the current restrictions only outdoor seating is permitted which allows around 5 tables. This replaces Ask Italian which we saw close during the lockdown
Why bother? I thought the same question however a soft opening allows staff and management to iron out teething issues and promotes the restaurant before opening the indoors to the town. Just my take on it anyway.
Due to the colder evenings in April, we opted for a 5pm table which appeared to be the sweet spot as it began getting chilly as we were getting ready to leave.
You could tell the staff were new, of which you'd half expect so not really an issue or to be marked down on so soon after the opening. Sometimes we would be left waiting for longer than we'd have liked, however not long enough to really be an issue. This is certainty an area they'd need to improve if waiting on 20/30 tables when restriction lift. Overall, the staff were well dressed, polite and happy to help/assist.
I opted for the Mixed Shish Kebab (as pictured) it was well presented and hit the spot. You get complimentary bread with your meal which was nice. Less rice than the local competitor however not really an issue for me as you still get a decent sized meal. We also opted for the calamari which although were only 4 rings, were decent sized rings
They were also open to altering one of the meals for a non-meat eater on the table without fuss or issues which was good to see.
Food was prompt (as you'd expect with 5 tables) and tasty throughout.
In true Turkish fashion we opted for a local Efes Draft Lager which went down very well. A good 5% light refreshing lager presented in a barrel shaped bottle (500ml).
Price wise for what I ordered anyway they were slightly cheaper than the local competition which is nice to see. Maybe that's the cost of the rice portion difference?
Inside looked like they've done a really nice job and I can imagine the atmosphere being on the nicer side of restaurants within Rayleigh. I'll saved that judgement for when we're allowed to eat inside again.
Would I recommend Hazel's, Yes certainly. Although perhaps when we're allowed to eat inside again.
Aboutsloutly marvellous, apparently a few teething problems when it first opened, however we went today, brilliant, great staff & food.. thanks to everyone
We had a truly memorable time at this restaurant the food was beautifully presented and the overall ambience was relaxed and nothing was too much trouble ! I have been there on many occasions and the waiting staff are friendly and so hospitable. I must mention one particular waiter Amir who if he is not now should he made a manager at this restaurant as he looks after every aspect of the running of the restaurant so that the customers receive a good service and everything runs smoothly. I will definitely be back with friends to enjoy.
