Hi all. This is the review I have written about this pub that I visited on Saturday night. I have published it on my food blog site also.
it was a cold and very wet Saturday evening. Myelf, my partner and in-laws had booked a table for 7.30pm. We arrived a little before then to a very warm welcome by Yvonne the landlady. The pub itself is a traditional British pub which I love. The saloon bar at one side and the snug now the restaurant on the other. With an open fire lit and music in the bacxkground this is an ideal place for a quiet family meal out in the country.
We got seated at our table and our order was taken. The menu is basic and simple but all the food is freshly prepared and there is plenty of it. I think it is what you would call traditional pub grub which is great because while other pubs are now gastro pubs offering little bits of meat with a drizzle of sauce this place does away with all of that and get's back down to basics which is great. There is something on the menu for everyone. From steaks cooked to your liking to deep pan pizzas. There is also a childrens menu offer fo the younger diner.
I had to start baked camambert cheese with a redcurrant jelly and fresh bread for dipping. At first I did think I was going to struggle eating it all as there was so much bread. However I did manage every delicious bite. What was even better was that I wasn't bloated out and too full afterwards. For mains I had a duck and cherry pie made with shortcrust pastry on all sides (a proper pie), that was accompanied by fresh veg and chips. This was a real treat. At first I could not make up my mind which pie to choose from. There was a steak and stilton pie on the menu also. Yvonne very kindly asked me should she suprise me as I could not make up my mind out of the two? Well she made a brilliant choice! The pie was delicious. The duck and cherry complimented eachother perfectly and the pastry was excellent. Homemade and again not too filling as some pastries can be.
My in-laws had steaks for their mains which I am told where cooked to perfection. My other half had a Dragon pie which was a hot and spicy beef pie with a puff pastry lid again which I am told tasted amazing. I think the only criticism I would have would be that the pies could have come out with a small gravy boat to accompany the potatoes and vegetables.
Finally my third and final course was a mint Aero cheesecake with vanilla ice cream. Again homemade and tasted wonderful. In fact the cool mint cheesecake and ice cream gave a really great refreshing end to a fabulous meal. I would highly reccomend this place to family and friends and will definitley go back there again. For all four meals without drinks came to about £70.00 which I though was very reasonable in cost. The staff are really friendly and helpful. Nothing is too much trouble for them. This is a family business and that shows. You get a really warm feeling whn you enter and you know you will be well looked after.
