I do enjoy pushing people's boundaries, so when a group of friends said they wanted a cheap place to drink in the Northern Quarter (cue most of those 'not-in-the-know' proclaim 'not possible!') I took them here.
Their faces, as we walked in, was a picture. I get what they mean to be fair. There always seems to be a rough-assed bouncer on the door (tattoos on his face etc.) and a toothless old woman swaying on the steps outside. But - don't let that put you off!!
Go inside and it's like a proper locals' local, like the Rovers Return or the Queen Vic. There's a real eclectic mix of people - young, old, chav, hipster, grandads and grandmas...all in Manchester City centre! Where they have all come from and how they get here is anyone's guess, but when the karaoke comes on, the entertainment rivals X Factor! Even the dead-hard doorman came inside to sing a bit of Neil Diamond.
Later we all staggered out into the night, wondering what the hell had happened but whatever it was, we felt sure we'd do it all again!
Another traditional old style pub done up sympathetically in a shabby chic style. I liked that they have kept some of the original features such as tiles, wooden floors, and brickwork. Surprisingly big with 3 floors, worth a visit if you're around that area.
Had a fantastic time on Saturday - the place bustling far before we got there (and we arrived around 4pm). Karaoke was a hit and the atmosphere was a proper local boozer, and the service was fast. I would highly recommend for anyone look for classic pub vibes.
