Absolutely delicious salt fish fritters in sourdough, with pickles and chipotle mayo!
And the richest hot chocolate I’ve had in this country! The perfect dessert.
Left absolutely full to the brim and smiling.
The staff here are so friendly and the views of the river are quite special.
A must to anyone visiting or living in the area.
This excellent and very busy Michelin and Good Food Guide listed cafe right beside the Teme at Dinham, below the castle at Ludlow, just a few metres from the more famous, Michelin-starred Mr Underhill’s does nothing to diminish the town’s culinary reputation. The food is all carefully-sourced and in perfect condition. A bustling slight confusion about what was on and what was off was soon overcome and my melt-in-the-mouth gravadlax arrived with dill and mustard dressing and first class fresh rye bread. My companions’ pasta looked pretty good too. I followed with panacotta and a poached peach. The wine is sourced as carefully as the food and comes from ‘small family run independent vineyards’ and a modestly-priced Alsatian white - Domaine Leon Boesch, La Cabane 2011 – rounded the whole thing off.
The Green Cafe has 30 seats inside with 25 on the patio outside, only of course usable when the weather is good, so you need to book. It is a lunch-time venue and operates 90 minute sittings. But on a good day, as it was for our visit, it’s an utter joy. Kids were safely paddling in the shallow water of the river and the mood, assisted by the friendly, busy, but unhassled staff, was like a party.
The green credentials of the place are underlined by the care with which everything is done, including refurbishment. It is worth citing this – we are using Edward Bulmers paints - "Pots of Paints" based in Pembridge, Herefordshire. Our new tables have been made from reclaimed wood by Steve Hodges of Leominster – how entirely brilliant is that?
A stroll across Dinham Bridge, led to the riverside nature path on the right bank of the Teme which we took on our way to the Charlton Arms, where, on the terrace overlooking the river, we sank a few pints of Hobsons. Not too bad a lunchtime at all.
Ooh I say, veg mezzo platter, charcuterie platter, rump of lamb, scallops, vine Verde and Bordeaux . Sublime! Lovely people serving! What a cracking night! Thanks guys, nice end to our visit from the Yorkshire Dales.
