Classy venue. Lovely food. Lovely people. A most place to come and have fun. I would highly recommend this place.
As a resident who lives opposite the Pelican Rum Bar. I would like to meet the idiot that granted their business a license. The constant thump of baseline keeps residents from any sleep. And as for them closing at 2 am, as suggested by their website. That's nonsense. They're banging out tunes way past 3.30 am. Inconsiderate. Just soundproof the place ffs!
Let's get one thing straight. I am Oyinbo. But my G/F is Yoruba. We have eaten there in the restaurant proper (not a buffet) a goodly number of times and the cuisine is always fabulous, and beautifully presented. The first time I ate seriously there I was so impressed I insisted on paying more than the bill I was given. It took me a few visits to convince the chef (the chef changed a few times, Maxine herself is the best but the others have always been good) that merely because I am not black they did not need to halve the amount of chili in my food and that would be my ONLY hint of food criticism. Cocktails great but deadly ( a long rum punch as distinct from an alco-killer would be an addition to the drinks list) and I love Wray and Nephew but cannot always get it elsewhere. Wines adequate. In a perfect world I'd like some "real ale" but tbf the catchment area is not ideal for that. Also in a perfect world I'd like to see imported Nigerian brewed Guinness and maybe imported Crucial Brew, but I envisage high add-on costs and maybe even licensing issues. One time I went there and the card payment system was down which got me VERY annoyed and I shouted at the then Maitre D very rudely in French (he was French) but there was a terminal up the road so that sorted that. Another time the sound system was down and the poor DJ (Commander B of Vibes FM fame) was trying to push roots out of 8 inch ceiling speakers, but that was while Maxine's husband G was in hospital after a heart attack and the sound system was his baby - but I took over the solution and put my own sound system in there for a while (all the DJs loved it) and sourced Maxine a system that while not as banging as mine worked pretty damned well. In fact she keeps getting told to turn it down. So, food A1 (mostly) soundz A1 (mostly) but even Homer (that's the Greek, not from the Simpsons) nods.
