It's a tiny restaurant in the rustic looking basement of a wine merchant. Casual service with changing menu written on the blackboard. There are small plates for sharing, which arrive in random order from the kitchen. The kitchen is touted as British, but it feels quite French influenced to me because the cooking style is rather rich.
First dish to arrive were bubble and squeak croquettes served with a good dollop of bovril flavoured homemade mayonnaise. Rich and filling with nonetheless a light texture inside.
Next we got the charcuterie board which contained very thin slices of pork coppa and venison salami garnished with undressed watercress. Very nice. Big portion even for two sharing.
Artichoke hearts had been pan fried then roasted and served with some cow's curd and sweet potato crisps. Deliciously soft with an intense artichoke flavour. The crisps came out of a deep fat fryer rather a dehydrator.
Smoked and fried spuds were delicious with the same bovril mayonnaise. Terrific crispy texture so deep fried at a high enough temperature.
Last dish to arrive was the smoked beef stew. A small terrine of rich stew with a dumpling and carrots and brussel sprouts. The only order that felt a little pricey at £12 for quite a small portion.
Food was all very tasty, if a little on the heavy side. For the two of us 5 of the little dishes was a filling meal that left no room for dessert. If I would fault the menu design, I would say they need one or two lighter dishes such as sauteed chard or spinach, and a pickle dish to make a more balanced meal. But perhaps our order was a little skewed because our reservation was late at 21:00, and they had sold out of several items, including all the fish. The house wine is a very reasonable 17.50 and quite pleasant. We attended the discounted soft launch, but at full price our excellent meal would have been a reasonable £75 before tip.
Went there for dinner on a Friday evening. Really nice and cozy place, great atmosphere, and wonderful service. To begin with, they go beyond to accommodate food requirements and allergies (e.g., gluten free).
The food was delicious and goes well with the wines they have on offer. The format is small plates to share. We got six dishes between the two of us, and all tasted good. Some highlights were the beetroot dish, as well as the meat pie (which could have benefitted from a bit more salt though). Moreover, as I mentioned, they did go out of their way to make certain dishes gluten free.
Will definitely go there again.
Very, very delicious! As a northerner I love the food, northern at heart but with a very stylish and professional twist. The tatty scones and oxtail pie were a highlight, but in truth I could have spent an hour just eating the bread and butter. The wine was tasty and the staff very knowledgeable. A great place, enjoy your visit!
