Excellent food and great service. Prices very reasonable but portions quite small so you may need more than one thing.
My new work home of Farringdon is fast becoming my go-to destination for after work drinks and dinner. An area not fully investigates until now has thrown up some interesting choices. 155 Clerkenwell was a recently discovered gem and now The Fence shows its true med colours through it's food.
I have been to The Fence once before on a friday night when it has a bar/club vibe. A DJ sets up in the corner and there is dancing in amongst the drinkers. A noisy and vibrant singles paradise.
Enter the light of day and the complete ensues, with a calm and relaxed lunch service with tapas style sharing dishes. In the last few weeks I have been there 3 times because I dig it. Its cool for sharers but if you are like me who takes the lead from Joe on Friends, "Joe doesn't share", then you can grab your own mix and match to polish off. They recommend three dishes per person, for lunch you can get away with two.
As I visited several times, I will group all of the dishes we tried in this one post. Meat! I am a big fan, so the gorgeous medium rare steak slices were the winner for me. Continuing the carnivore route there was also veal meat balls. For seafood fans, there was the delicately prepared squid with chick peas and broccoli. Three well seasonal chicken thighs, and a pumpkin gnocchi with kale, sage butter and parmesan. Sides of chips, polenta chips, garlicky green beans and grilled root veg, perfectly compliment your main selection of choices.
It is a light, airy and contemporary space. Good service and a little bit above average so far as costs. Not for a cheapo lunch. But the food is great and I like how informal things are. A real contrast to the evenings shenanigans.
Great atmosphere with a lovely backyard! We found this place randomly and it turned out to be amazing! Delicious warm brownie, served with salted caramel ice cream on top.
