I used to work right by Charlotte Street, and that made lunchtimes incredibly dangerous for my bank balance. It’s gotten even better since I stopped working around there – I love The Ninth, and you are spoilt for choice in that neighbourhood (Pied a Terre is another fantastic restaurant).
Extremely good food.
A 4 hour American pop-up in London had me craving burgers, but not enough to stand in line for them. So I headed to the new branch of a local burger & chicken chain, which had a 50% off on food and hence also had a queue of about 40 waiting to be seated.
This was when I realised, Fitzrovia is not a great place to be hunting for a quick sit down lunch on a weekday afternoon. There are plenty of options, but they are all overflowing.
I quickly scrolled through my bookmarks & saw that Herman Ze German was around the corner and had larger seating space (2 floors) This was a great call as a lot of people also were taking their hot dogs away. So there was a queue, but it was moving very quickly and there was seating space.
When I saw the burger schnitzel on the menu, I knew I had to have it, but I also wanted to try their famed wurst.
The menu has changed a bit from some of the pictures here on yelp. You don't get a form to fill up. You order and pay at the counter from an overhead menu and if you want to eat in, they give you a number and deliver the food to your table. Food combinations have also changed.
The pork / chicken schnitzel burger came with fries or salad, so fries it was. (If indulging in carbs, go the whole hog). I chose the pork and bacon option and it was absolutely amazing.
I also chose the chilli wurst with the hottest curry sauce on the side and that was so good, I can go back just for that curry sauce. It's good and spicy, not one of those cop-out spicy.
Staff are constantly checking on you and have a natural smile on their faces. So even if you have a bit of a wait (10-15 minutes since I ordered schnitzel, hot dog orders were coming out much faster), it isn't a frustrating one (as I was seated at a proper table, within 5 minutes of entering, having ordered and paid) I'd rather be seated at a table waiting for my food, than standing in line outside a Food joint.
They have a range of drinks in unusual combinations, the cola orange lemonade was quite refreshing. And they also have beer.
Would be happy to go back any time I feel a craving for burgers/schnitzel or hot dogs.
To celebrate National Hotdog day, we purchased the deal from Timeout for £7 and get the hotdog in Chilli Wurst, chips and a fizzy drink.
The hotdog comes with complimentary crispy onions and we quite like our chilli wurst with little hint of heat instead of hot chilli spicy. The double fried chips were crispy but slightly over seasoned. It's overall decent meal for lunch but definitely need a coffee to keep up the rest of day.
