Went for my friend’s birthday, it was really nice. We were in the lower level so it was a bit cold and there was nowhere to hang jackets or purses (the seats were backless). Definitely recommend booking in advance as it is small and crowded. The food was delicious, nice staff, and reasonable prices for London.
This was a great restaurant and the food was extremely delicious, which definitely warranted my overall rating of 5 stars. Very high quality ingredients with an authentic Japanese feel. However, the service was slightly slow (just because they were busy) and it was a little tightly packed with strange-ish seats, hence the 3 and 4 stars for atmosphere and service respectively. However, the servers were very nice, the online payment was interesting and convenient and the food was fairly priced, especially considering the location.
Overall, the food was very good. Maybe there are some things that can be improved, but it might be a matter of personal taste. What I really liked was the miso soup. It was very tasty. The chicken wings were also delicious, but I found them spicy, maybe this is my fault that I don't have much tolerance for spicy things. The beef was interesting. It was the first time I tasted it that way, though I found it a bit dry. The tonkatsu chicken was also a bit dry, in my opinion, but the taste was good. The service was kind and fast. I would repeat the experience to taste other dishes. In general, I recommend it, it's a good Japanese restaurant at an affordable price.

Cozy restaurant that is actually bigger as it seems. We did not have a reservation however after 10 minutes we could take a seat at the counter. Besides the beef we had the Katsu curry (highly recommend).
Overall very welcoming experience with great food.
Very lovely little Japanese spot near Piccadilly Circus. Two floors and both very comfortable and modern. Food was good. Great pork tonkatsu and beef with rice. Beer on tap and summer drinks also refreshing. Dessert looks nice - next time! Friendly staff and they also have QR code for self check out and payment.
LOVE THIS RESTAURANT! Authentic Japanese food with amazing staff!! The restaurant is like izakaya in the sense that they offer small plates such as tsukune and kyurizuke, but they also offer large plates such as gyudon. Tsukune is my favourite!
Food was delicious. The chicken had the perfect crunch and tenderness. Omg the matcha mochi and crepe were yummmy. Normally I find food from restaurants on the salty/sweet side, but all the food I had here was not too salty/sweet!
My first visit to Machi-ya and I had fairly high expectations based on other people’s reviews. Overall it was worth the trip. Tsukure was outstanding and so was the Age tofu. I was a bit disappointed with the Tebasaki (Wings) as I was assuming to be the one typically available in a (grilled over charcoal) Yakitori or Izakaya restaurant. Regardless the wings were still tasty but just wasn’t what I had expected. Oyako Donburi could have been more moist with the eggs a bit more runny and cooked with more onions. It was a busy evening so the kitchen probably was a bit hectic. Will certainly come back if and when I am in the neighborhood next.
Amazing rice bowls.
The sizzling beef was very chewy and not the best. I also felt a bit sick afterwards.
We don't know if it was a mistake, but when we asked to pay with a card (so we don't pay a fee for the QR code link), they tried to charge us for more than we ordered (about £8 more).
What a great place. I would highly recommend booking as there aren't that many tables (although more than you think as there is lovely seating downstairs!).
Service was absolutely impeccable, the right side of friendly but professional. All of the good was fresh, hot (when supposed to be) and truly delicious.
I will be working my way though the menu.
