Lovely cosy atmosphere, with good quality authentic food for a great price. Will definitely be coming back here time and again with family and friends.
Going there on a whim after me and my other half suddenly had a strong desire for Greek food that day. We had not heard of Kolossi before, but we went simply because the Zomato app informed me that it was the closest Greek restaurant at the time. We were pleasantly surprised to find this little gem.
Nestled in London right between Farringdon and St. Pancras station, it is quite easy to find and you don't have to make an obscure journey or many changes to get there. Upon arrival we were greeted well by friendly staff and seated immediately despite not having a reservation.
The restaurant did not boast extravagant decor or tables, nor was there drinks menu particularly large or diverse, mostly standard stuff with a small selection of Greek beers and spirits; it was in fact a very modest place with a family feel to it. It showed off a few nice pictures (of course relating to Greece) and a few vines loosely dangling from the ceiling, nothing special compared to many other places. this did, however, made it fell very authentic, this also, more importantly, made it feel wonderfully homey to the point were you felt so relaxed and contempt that you could have quite easily believed you were at a friends house. The only issue would be that it was quite small and there was not much room when the waiters were walking around and we were very close to other people, however, this wasn't severe enough to bother us or any of the other patrons as far as i could tell.
For the starters i had Kalamari (spelt with a K on there menu), you can get it pretty much anywhere and is very easy to make, however i have found many places that seem to fail on good calamari, however Kolossi did a great job on making a nice bowl to nibble on, without the batter being crunchy or fatty, with the squid inside being a lovely texture, with flavorsome herbs and a sauce, Although they were not the best i have tried, it is one of those cases where you are happy because you got what you expected and it satisfies you.
the person who i went with had the grilled haloumi for her starter, (after i stole some off her plate) i decided it is pretty much the same story as with calamari, a dish that's easy to prepare, not uncommon, yet they do not let you down and you are quite satisfied with what you ate.
For my main i ordered the kleftiko, a traditional dish which i hoped would like up to the name, the waiter seemed to be very pleased with my choice, and it is easy to see why.
the food arrived promptly by the grinning waiter who remained as polite and attentive as when we first arrived.
The lamb itself tasted divine, with the flavors being in a great balance with the herbs complementing each other rather than over powering it up. You could tell by the full flavor flowing throughout the meat, the texture and the way it simply fell off the bone that it has been marinading for several hours, the way it should be. The let downs of this dish was the potatoes and the size of the meal, it quite small indeed and receiving only a couple of potatoes with an reasonable amount of meat but not enough to compensate for the lack vegetables . The potatoes were very dry and bland, with not enough juices or sauce from the meat to make them any better, a massive let down when you unknowingly subject you taste buds to the juxtaposition of succulent, luscious meat, to banal potatoes whose dryness is able lacerate your vocal cords.
the meat did more than make up for this allowing me to still have enjoyed my meal.
the person who joined me had the moussaka which she described as tasting like a Greek lasagna with potatoes rather than pasta. From what i tried of hers i was very impressed as it was to the same standard as my kleftiko, they were very generous with the cheese, (which i personally love, maybe not so good if your not a cheese lover).
The Béchamel sauce was amazing and the beef was also splendid and flavorsome.
she seemed to receive quite a large portion which meant they we did not need to order dessert.
At a very reasonable price, great food (mostly) and service, this place has very few drawbacks for the price range.
A place which i plan to visit again and would heartily recommend for other.
What an amazing food we had, I treated two dearest friends, one of which is Greek and they totally loved it.
Coffee and dessert also very delicious.
The price was very reasonable considering the quality of food and service was friendly and helpful.
I can definitely recommend this restaurant if you wish to have a decent meal in a quiet restaurant.
