A little cute Japanese restaurant in Chiswick, off the main road on Devonshire Road where you’ll find a few independent restaurants & shops. The seafood was very fresh & nicely prepared. The fatty tuna sashimi definitely was our favourite, it just melted in our mouth. Another dish to point out was the Scallops Usuzukari. They described the dish similar to carpaccio. Eaten with a bit of spicy yuzu zest (I think) & dipped in ponzo sauce. The Karaage also deserves a shoutout, it was so chunky! Very juicy & tender on the inside. I loved every dish and would totally order everything again.
When I said this was a small restaurant, I really do mean it. It can only sit 8 people & they have very short opening times. Make sure to book cause I think they only do one round of customers then close up. The restaurant itself was casual and quiet. Very simple, no faff vibes. It was quite relaxing sitting in there & just enjoying the freshly prepared food. Didn’t feel like I was in a city. I loved the handwritten menu with the little illustrations. Also the handwritten special dishes on the wall. The staff was lovely, pretty sure it’s an old Japanese couple that owns it. They also seem to like cats as I noticed a few cat items. This is definitely a place to add to your list of you love good traditional Japanese food.
Reason for visiting: Searching for a cosy authentic Japanese dinning spot.
Would I visit again: Definitely! Rokkon ticked and kept all the expectations you might have about real, authentic Japanese food without the artificial, superfluous trappings that many of the new Japanese dinning options offer.
Here is real.or non existent.
Was the food delicious? Absolutely! Deep fried tofu/doufu was lightest and best we had for long time. Delicious lightly battered prawn & vegi tempura, perfectly grilled yakitori, generous high quality sashimi platter with (!!!) fatty tuna ... and for the more conservative ones a delicious salmon teppanyaki style.
Price-performance ratio: Good, We paid £150 for three persons but including a little botzje sake, wine and beer.
Service style: very Japanese. This is - said with utmost respect - a charming Mom & Pop dinning spot. From kitchen to table are my. 5 steps. So very kind and attentive.
Atmosphere: Feels like in the side alleys of Tokyo or Nagasaki. Super small, 8 seats, basic decoration. Here is everything about the food.
Comments: We will definitely come back. Book garbin advance! Walk in nearly Impossible.
Exceptional quality of raw fish! Delicious evrything what we’ve ordered. Highly recommend! Our order was: Himechirashi(sashimi on bowl of sushi rice) & Barachirashi (small cut variety of raw fish on bowl of sushi rice) & Negitoro roll (chopped fatty tuna and spring onion roll). Black sesame ice cream was so tasty too!
