If you love mussels and beer, then you definitely have to pay a visit to belgo's. It's been a while since I've last gone, but every time I have been, I've always left very satisfied. Depending on what time you go, it can get really busy, but if time is on your side and your willing to wait with a pint, you won't be disappointed. Definitely recommended a visit if you're in the west end.
I went into Belgo with very little expectations and to my delight I was pleasantly surprised. The restaurant promises authentic Belgian food, specialising in Moules, Frites and Belgian beer and since I’ve not been to Belgium I really did not know what to expect. There are quite a few Belgo restaurants dotted around London so I assumed it would be another typical chain restaurant- bland quick food and cheesy music. Boy was I wrong.
Belgian cuisine derives its modesty from the country itself; everyone knows it's there yet no one seems to be bothered to check it out. Can't really say it's underrated as it barely goes under the radar scan and always seems to be overwhelmed by its larger culinary neighbor: France. Belgo is quintessentially Belgian; delightful yet unassuming. Even the waitress was almost embarassed to say that one of their offered beers won the world beer award as best beer. Anyway, enough for an intro. We had amazing Belgian white and blonde beers and started off with a heavenly asparagus gratin; molten moray sauce with generous browned gruyere cheese over a bed of toasted sour dough and fresh asparagus. Best gratin I have ever had. We then had a vol au vent; brilliantly designed puff pastry in a rich buttery sauce. I never think of vol au vent the same. Then came the everfamous moules - Belgian mussels. Make sure you eat them the proper Belgian way as the servers are to friendly to point it out for you; french fries with mayo. A varied array of mussels; we ordered the garlic and herbs one. Large pulp mussels cooked perfectly with just right the zestiness and taste so as to uplift the mussels flavor and unravel just the right 'fishiness'. The finale was a rotisserie chicken with a brilliant wild mushroom tarragon sauce. I have a weak spot for tarragon so this dish melted my heart away. I found the dessert menu to be brilliant: choose your waffle/crepe along with ice cream flavor and sauce. We chose waffle with salted caramel and white chocolate sauce. The perfect way to seal a perfect dinner. Will definitely come again. Impeccable food in humble settings. £25 a person. Final Verdict: 9/10. Follow me on instagram @londonarab_foodie
