London's new fervour is Japan's food for the masses - Ramen. Of the many iterations of ramen - soy-based, salt-based or laced with miso, the one that has recently taken the West End by storm is tonkatsu.
Born out of the streets of Hakata, Tonkatsu is a broth of pork bones boiled until the marrow, fat and collagen have reduced to an alchemic brew with dense flavours and umami noodles. Shoryu - launched around two years ago, is one of the favourites in the city, with its authentic Japanese ambience and setup.
The Koterri Hakata Tonkatsu has a much richer, thicker and meatier broth boiled for 12 hours and topped with char siu barbeque pork belly, double nitamago eggs, kikurage mushrooms, spring onion, ginger and nori seaweed. I was not bowled over by the never-ending bowl of noodles, but it was quite flavoursome and rich, to say the least. The various different ingredients make the dish a wonderful overall package with a deep umami touch to it. With the extra rich broth and the double nitamago egg, this dish is definitely not for the faint-hearted and if you are brave enough to get it, you're definitely in for a treat.
To prepare our stomachs and accompany our Ramens, we ordered their crisp and lightly pan-fried gyozas cocooning lightly spiced minced pork, pillowy soft steamed Bao buns with barbeque pork belly and soy marinated chicken karage along with the infamous tiger prawn tempura. These dishes really elevated the overall experience.
Shoryu is a real deal when in comes to relishing Japanese cuisine in London!
I never really liked Ramen much before I tried Shoryu as I used to find ramen bland and watery. But the ramen here was so flavourful and delicious that I went twice in one week.
There are two vegetarian ramen options - I liked the spicy one much more but that is because i like spice. Would definitely go back. Seating sometimes can be an issue especially if you are a group of 2 as you may be seated in a community table or against the window.
Best ramen I had in Europe. Very busy place, booking place Is recommended unless you can Wait even longer periods. Service very nice. Interior looks very nice And brings the mood of Japanese cuisine parlor. We had gyoza, signature ramen And kimchi. Everything was perfect.
