Tucked away just behind Regent Street, Shampers has a very cosy, familiar atmosphere. Despite the fact that we could not spot any non-business lunches, it felt more homely than corporate. The slightly asymmetrical pictures on the wall, the fresh flowers on the tables and in the bathroom, the blackboard with the specials on it… all contribute to a very comfortable atmosphere.
Besides the standard menu, we received an insert with the specials, which contained even more dishes than the other! We were spoilt for choice, but I selected the chilli and ginger squid to start, followed by the classic combo of steak frites.
Nice wine bar but very slow service.. 26 Oct 11: I found Shampers while walking around in the area before going to Masala Zone for dinner. I'm not a beer drinker (you will find a pub on most corners in London) so I was happy to have found Shampers.
It was happy hour and there were lots of people inside (as well as outside) enjoying their wine after their work day. I was able to grab a stool at the bar and chatted with a few near me.
I ordered a glass of red and then waited and waited and waited. The young woman that took my order disappeared while two others were busy serving other people. It took me a while to get the attention of one of the bartenders. I explained I had not received my wine and she asked who took my order. "I haven't seen her since she took my order, which was about 20 minutes ago." So she poured my wine and later asked me if I wanted another. I was thankful she kept an eye on my glass.
When I asked for the bill and received it, it showed just one glass. I told her the bill was incorrect, that I had two. She said because I didn't get my first glass in a timely manner she took it off the bill. Nice!
I'm rating this as average simply because of the poor service of the first bartender. Why take my order and then not follow through? The second one that took care of me was great. Thanks!
What a gem!. We had intended on dining in a completely different restaurant close by, but it was full and not available for over an hour. We wandered by this place and my other half kinda stopped like she was "drawn" to it. I thought, if that's not a sign nothing is!
We were greeted by a very polite waitress who said it would be a 15 minute wait for a seat, maybe a little more. Due to a cracking display of wine behind the counter I felt this might be worth an even longer wait so 15 minutes was nothing. So we propped ourselves by the bar.
First up, super wine. Went for a Spanish wine and it was delicious. Couldn't get enough of it. Let me tell you, I went into Shampers slightly tipsy, if I'm honest, I left a little drunk!
Then the food, we both had fish, and it was cracking. I had crab claws and my other half had prawns to start with. We both were extremely happy with our choices. Next up, I had some special that was a kind of fish fin or something. Cannot recall what it was again (too much wine at this stage probably!). My other half had hake. Both were cooked to perfection and absolutely fantastic.
Wasn't able for dessert... but I wish I was! Definitely returning here for more of this goodness.
