Don't come here looking for refinement. This is hearty homely cooking but done well with generous portions and low prices. I imagine that this is what meals with a Cuban grandmother would be like. Service is warm and friendly and I love the ramshackle kitschy atmosphere. Speaking of ramshackle don't miss the WC featuring a wash basin supported by a bicycle frame.
They bring complimentary olives and banana chips as you sit down. I ordered the sirloin rare and my companion had the Plato Cubanito.
My steak was cooked to order on a cast iron griddle pan. Okay, it was not the best sourced steak I've had (not aged, for example) but there was plenty of it and it was decent. It came with patatas bravas and sauteed root vegetables. These were carrots, parsnips and cassava and a little broccoli thrown in for color. There was also some rice with black beans.
My companion was very happy with his slow braised pork and chicken with red peppers and onions garnished with the same sauteed root vegetables with rice and black beans. Flavorful braising liquor and very tender meat with a few slices of grilled chorizo to liven things up both in terms of texture and spiciness. Nice dish.
Portions were big so we took leftovers home for tomorrow's packed lunch in the office. We used a tastecard, which they honor with a 2 for 1 deal for mains on weekdays. With a bottle of red tempranillo house wine (£15.95), dinner for two on the tastecard was 30 quid before tip. At full price that would have been £44. We will definitely come back to try tapas at full price where they do 6 tapas for £14.95. Despite using the discount card we were offered complimentary shots of tequila after we paid our bill. Now that's hospitality.
This has to be the best Cuban restaurant / bar in London. The food is just amazingly delicious. I love Mexican food but this is better. Realistic prices too. There is a great vibe here with South American music and South American staff. Feels like being on holiday. I have checked this place off as one of my favourite places to eat. They also own the pizza restaurant next door so you can sit in both restaurants and eat from either. Great eats
A restaurant during the day that turns into a lively bar at night!
Stays open until 3 am in the weekends with terrace opened until 1 am and then moving to the indoors and underground dance floor.
They play good latin classics as well as more modern reggaeton music.
Drinks are fairly cheap (9.20£ for a double Gin and tonic is not bad!) and there is also table service outdoors.
Really cool vibe!
