We had a friendly welcome to an empty restaurant at 6 pm. The menu was short and not overly complicated, much like the restaurant itself. On the drinks front, not many options for people who do not imbibe alcohol. Was excited by wild boar on the menu, being an old family favourite.
Not being a fan of pickling usually, the pickled mackerel starter was beautifully subtle without the harshness of excessive acidity. The flavour of the mackerel came through in each silken mouthful. Octopus carpaccio was not at all chewy and well seasoned. The starters augured well for the mains to come.
My fellow diner's hake looked like a perfectly fried bit of fish when it arrived. Verdict on eating-perfectly cooked with crispy skin and tender flesh. Served with side of mushroom and chard. Saddle of wild boar did not disappoint-meat was tender and moist. Similarly the duck breast. Small amount of chinese cabbage on side was a perfect accompaniment. There was really no need to order any extra sides. What was served was quite sufficient.
There were 5 of us and the mains all came out in good time without too much of a wait for each diner to get their plate-Signs of a well oiled machine. The cooking is very accomplished for an establishment that is low key, casual and not overly 'pompous'. We were all too full (post Christmas) to try out the desserts. Maybe next time!
On a final note, all the tables were full by the time we left.
Salut! has raised the bar for restaurants in North London. The area is already full of great eateries serving modern European food but this intimate dining experience trumps all others, regularly booking out throughout the week.
Lovely evening out with friends in such great place with Modern European Cuisine, fantastic experience to watch your dish preparation, customer service at highest level and attention to details and mention during order in time of a serving our table.
A Biggest thank you to Mr. Owner for his presence, cooking and serving us with delicious food in plates, deserts are MUST TRY…
