Srihata is the new chic restaurant that used to be Tagore. Srihata takes on the more urban Indian approach to the menu they offer (similar to how the Indian Street Kitchen Brewery do their menus). Parking is limited on street but plenty avaliable at the Miller and Carter next door with no time restriction. Entering the venue, a warm welcome by the 3 staff members at the bar was on offer. The venue has 12 tables downstairs and has been designed elegantly to resemble the modern approach. No black leather chairs or extravagant chandelairs here. A very floral and green approach had been adopted to resemble parts of the jungle in that respect. The neon signage and pink floral vases on each table I found to be quite cute.
I was shown to my table and handed the menu and drinks menu promptly. The menu is different to a traditional Indian. As the host explained to me, they use their own stock and try to adopt a much more authentic experience compared to most curry houses who use the same gravy. The location was not too busy and had 4 covers in at the time. Given it is in Hockley Heath which in itself is a quiet village outside of Shirley, it made a nice change for a Saturday night. I was offered poppadoms on arrival which are not my thing so I declined it on this occasion.
I had the following today;
Starters - Gilafi Seekh Kebab and Nizami Chicken Tikka
Expected in any Indian restaurant but with that Srihata twist such as the Seekh Kebab coming with fennel seeds.
The chicken tikka was succulent and juicy. No greasiness here. Cooked to perfection and very tender. Likewise the same for the Seekh Kebab too with a mild kick to it.
The fresh salad accompaniment was great too. Better than your usual boring lettuce on its own in most places.
Main - Kamalapur Journey (Chicken)
The hottest curry they do. A west bengalian dish. An array of chillies, tomatoes, mustard seeds and curry leaf. Accompanied with mushroom rice. Plenty of meat. Just enough sauce. Some places put way too much sauce with the curry. The rice was soft and fluffy. The curry for me personally I could not taste not a lot of spice but it was perfectly smooth in flavour and tasted great.
A note for users with accessibility issues. A step up is needed to get into the restaurant and toilets are up some stairs. Drinks were the usual array of beers, spirits and wines. Cobra and Malabar readily on tap. The soft drinks are bottled not draught. No cocktails at this venue unfortunately.
Overall I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and what they have done with the venue is brilliant in terms of its refurbishment and brings a unique venue to the quiet village of Hockley Heath. Only 25 minutes from Birmingham.
In the area on business and read the reviews prior to attending. All the positive reviews are totally worthy. From the welcoming front of house staff, lovely interior, and amazing food, all excellent! Like most, I've had my fair share of Indian food, but their food was by far the best I have eaten. I highly recommend and will be back again. Thank you to all the staff...amazing restaurant!
We've eaten in twice here in the past two weeks. We are very well served in the area for great Indian food, this new addition though really stands out. We tried this place just because it was new. Both times the food has been excellent, one of the best in the area. The restaurant itself is very nice inside, the staff very friendly and accommodating.
