Arrived for a late lunch after a disappointing day in Hawkshead. We had 5 hungry travellers including a 6 year old who was getting ratty because she was hungry. We drove past the Outgate Inn and quickly decided to pull in and see if they offered food. Luckily they did. We didn't really expect much from a small country pub which seemed to be in the middle of nowhere but we would have been happy with just a basic sandwich or plate of chips by this point.
We were so pleasantly surprised! The lunch menu was lovely, offering a great range of food; sandwiches as well as "main" meals, and platters (ploughmans lunch, fish platter, meat platter, veggie platter!) And the prices were reasonable too, sandwiches costing around 5 or 6 pound each, mains around £10-£12. The children's menu was lovely, I have quite a fussy child, though not in the usual sense, she doesn't like "baby food" (as she calls it!) And much prefers "real" food, so she was happy to see that the menu wasn't too kid like with the usual fish fingers and chicken nugget options; she chose to have tomato pasta (her favourite!) But she was spoiled for choice between the home made sausage roll and chicken goujons too! The kids meals are a little more expensive than some places at £5.95 a meal, however the meal she had looked lovely, and £5.95 isn't ridiculously expensive- you get what you pay for and the food seemed to be home made!
Myself and 2 of the other adults had the daily special burger: a Cajun pork burger with stilton cheese (you could have cheddar instead) served in a ciabatta (which we also thought may have been home made or at least not a cheap bought bun!) With home made chips and a huge onion ring. The burger was absolutely gorgeous, the burger was delicious!!! And presented fantastically on a piece of slate as a plate. The final member of our party had the fish platter, which looked delicious and had a huge doorstep piece of granary bread, calamari, prawns in Marie rose sauce and a piece of smoked mackerel. He said it was gorgeous!!
We were so pleasantly surprised by the experience that I had to come on here and write a review! The spot is lovely, and they have rooms too which would be perfect for people on walking holidays. The meal cost £58 including drinks (2 pints, and 3 soft drinks) for 4 adults and a child which in my opinion really isn't bad at all! If I am ever in the area again, I would definitely eat here again! Highly recommended!!! :)
Stopped here for lunch a Lovely pub, good service, hubbie had fish finger sandwich best ever he said and I had meat platter which was excellent you would need to book if eating at night as people were trying to book tables for the Saturday night but they were booked up .
This is a top notch pub. Choice and quality of beers and spirits is first class. Food menu is varied and delicious. Nothing is too much trouble for the ever helpful fantastic staff. If you visit The Lakes, you must visit The Outgate Inn.
