Never judge a company by what they get right, but how they put right what they initially got wrong.
It was with a certain trepidation that I approached Grantham’s, Carter & Miller, for the second visit…
I had initially taken my wife for dinner on Saturday 3rd March. I had been particularly keen as I have Coeliac disease and am unable to tolerate gluten. C&M have a delicious looking menu, including a wide range of gluten free choices choices.
Upon sitting down on the 3rd, we had been particularly impressed by the general ambience and our helpful server Bella. Bella was very knowledgeable and helped in making our choices. Alas, we were halfway through our starter when the server had rushed back to our table and informed me that they may have made an error in the kitchen and I may have a non gluten free starter. Whilst eating gluten is not going to kill me, it is going to make me pretty ill for 24/36 hrs, I asked to speak to the front of house manager and explained the situation. The General Manager, Simone , then came over to speak to us, he could not have been more apologetic and fully accepted that they had made a mistake. We obviously didn’t pay for what we’d eaten and he gave us a £100 gift voucher by way of apology and we left.
I expected the worst, but I was pleasantly surprised at not feeling too bad at all. Either I had ingested a very small amount of gluten, or the dish had in fact been gluten free.
I returned to C&M the next day, as I wanted to explain to Simone that I was in fact ok and to thank them for the way they had handled the matter. I was met by Simone and the Head Chef, Andy Quigg. I thanked them for being upfront and informing me as soon as they realised that there may have been a mistake and for the way in which they dealt with the issue. They explained that they do have procedures in place to avoid incidents of this nature and that all staff had been reminded of them. They assured me that this had been a one off. They also invited my wife and I to again dine with them at a time of our choosing – in addition to the £100 voucher already received.
My wife and I duly dined on Sat 11th March, WOW, is the only word to describe what followed.
We were again met at table by Bella, our server, who again explained that she would be looking after us and would personally bring our food to table in order to ensure my meal was gluten free. We made our choices and waited whilst our meals were prepared. Bella was wrong, and was obviously overruled , she didn’t bring our food to table; all courses were served personally by Andy, the Head Chef.
The staff were very attentive and Simone, the General Manager, visited us at the table to check all was well.
I have to confess that I have never experienced such a level of service and am extremely impressed. Carter & Miller are obviously a company that care about what they do and really want to look after their customers.
My wife & I loved the service and the meal. Would I as an allergy sufferer recommend C & M? Most definitely. The next time I visit I probably won’t be served by the Head Chef, but I have every confidence that I will be served an outstanding steak; by staff that care about their customers. Thank you for restoring my confidence Carter & Miller and for serving an outstanding steak, with sauces and trimmings. We’ll be back!
We went for a meal on Mother's day. It was excellent. The service was attentive and nothing too much trouble. Jo was our waiter and he looked after us very well.the steaks were cooked as we wanted them. They were served with separate sauce, a wedge of beautiful crisp well dressed lettuce and crispy French fries. The Shiraz went down a treat after a complimentary prosecco. The crème Brulee was to die for!!

My husband and I came for a meal last night to celebrate my birthday. It was amazing. The decor was great, very sophisticated.The staff were so polite and knowledgable. Holly was our waitress and she was attentive, informative and always had a smile.
The food was Devine, I highly recommend the Ribeye steak and the lobster. Everything was cooked as we had asked, and all came out in a reasonable time. The cocktail menu is seriously tasty, I worked my way through a handful and can’t wait to come back to try more. We had an awesome night and can’t wait to return. There is nothing like this restaurant close to grantham. Your doing an amazing job guys, keep it up.
