Oh summer joy!. Forget the pub food, haggis, and cullen skink common to the region and take the short diversion to Pillars of Hercules where you can find farm to table (maybe 100 ft of transport) vegetarian soups, sandwiches, salads, and so forth. It sure was a nice way to wait out jet lag.
I'm a little confused whether this establishment makes a distinction between their cafe and restaurant as would seem to be the case from their website but which isn't obvious on location. In practice it probably doesn't matter. The outside area seemed to be a popular gathering place for poets, artists, readers, writers, and other interesting people. Check it out.
A meal of 2 halves (as you might expect from a 2 courser).
The Thai green lentil soup was pretty much the best soup I've ever tasted and there was plenty of it too. The rustic brown bread was the perfect accompaniment.
We shared 2 cakes. The parkin carrot cake was great but the raspberry brownie disappointed being both dry and bereft of any fruit flavour.
Decent coffee and nice to have a choice of milks without extra charge.
We shall return.
We camped for 4 night. View was so lovely and it's very peaceful except for the odd car going past on the quiet lane. Places to have a fire. We were in the Banking field. Shower, washing up and toilets were part of cafe. I didn't see any facilities for freezing your ice pack which would be useful as its non electric. Can't wait to visit next year. I didn't try the cafe but it was always busy.
