Updated: visited 3 times already and still our best go to for lunch whenever we visit peak district.
I recently had the pleasure of dining at Stella's Kitchen and I have to say, I was blown away by the delicious food and the warm hospitality of the host. Every dish was bursting with flavor and made with the freshest ingredients. Stella was so warm that it was clear that she had put lot of love and care into every aspect of the meal. Definitely going back again. If you are travelling to the Peak District, this is a must visit place for amazing food.
We were recommended this place by a friend of a friend. I would firstly say don't let appearances put you off, it is someone's home but I would say well worth going in and enjoying. The whole experience is very homely.
Our group was large and a few people were late to the meal but this was able to be accommodated. We were also given a non-alcoholic drink which we didn't expect due to the lack of license. This was very welcome.
The starter was tasty and we loved the spicy sauce! The main meal was great, we loved the bean dish we were served. Everything was full of flavour and all our intolerances were met.
The flavours were so good I did consider giving a 5 star but the following points push it down for me.
The servers were shy and quiet, verging on a little awkward - Stella came back towards the end of the meal and that helped a bit
The starters and desserts are not buffet style, they were chosen by the restaurant. This is quite risky especially with a big group as not everyone liked both. Also the portions for these courses were small.
Having the words buffet to describe the experience led us to feel a little disappointed especially at the cost - perhaps our expectations were a little high. 5 dishes as a buffet despite them being good, didn't make it feel like a buffet and a few of our large group were left hungry, having not wanted to eat portions and portions of the same thing. There was enough food though on the whole, more diversity would have been nice.
Saw a sign for Afro Caribbean food in a local village and called in for refreshment. Thankfully she had room for serving drinks but her tables were booked up for her lunch menu.
Stella is a lovely and lively character, we bought some of her ginger scones to take away, just finished one of them, it was excellent, tasted the ginger all the way through the scone. When we are next going to be in the area we will make sure we book a table.
