I headed up to Leo's Beanery this week for a spot of breakfast. I didn't know this place existed until this week, and it's a wee hidden delight.
This eatery is just below street level but its open and light so you don't feel like you are heading 'underground' as such. If you know Edinburgh streets, you'll know that one end of a building can be below street level then out the back you can have a garden!
The place was bustling, quite noisy but I managed to find a table off to the side. A little more peaceful.
The place is filled with the smells of wonderful aromas of coffee and food cooking. The staff are friendly, efficient and busy.
Their breakfast menu is full of fairly healthy dishes - granola, steamed porridge and bagels; and for the more indulgent breakie there are lots of eggs, salmon and hollandaise!
I opted for the Leo's Breakfast Plate which is two softly poached free range eggs, avocado, wilted spinach with sourdough toast - £7.95. I asked for it without the spinach - not a fan especially for breakfast. AND a pot of tea.
Whilst waiting for my breakfast to arrive I watched the flow of people moving in and out of this place. Take-aways of coffees, bakes, breakfast rolls; seems a great meeting place for young mums and friends, and best of all its dog friendly! Huge thumbs up.
Breakfast arrived. Eggs were lovely and soft with runny yolks, not seasoned at all, which is how I like it - I prefer to salt and pepper my own eggs. The sourdough bread was a thick slice that had been slightly toasted so it was still soft in the middle and warm. (I had to request butter though).
As you all know I love a good cuppa tea and this was good. It was loose tea and served in a teapot that never spilled. 10/10 for that! Although I really wish I had ordered a coffee - hearing the grind of the coffee beans and the dark aromas of coffee wafting over to where I sat.... yep coffee would have been a better choice (next time!).
This is a lovely wee spot to have breakfast/lunch, a cuppa, a chat and its only 5/10 minutes walk from Princes St/Frederick St.
My only slight gripe is the price; at just over £10 for a cup of tea, 2 eggs and a slice of toast; I found this a little pricey.
Leo’s is a great little family run cafe at the bottom of Howe Street in Edinburgh’s New Town. Having tried many of their lunchtime salads and sandwiches (the hot smoked salmon sandwhich with beetroot, lemon and dill is a favourite) it was time to try out the brunch menu. Served until 1.30pm on a Saturday & Sunday, you’ll find all the usual options on the brunch menu. Mr. F&P opted for Leo’s Special Breakfast and I settled on the Eggs Florentine. A cup of Earl Grey, a blood orange San Pelligrino and a double espresso completed our brunch table.

Leo's Beanery take their coffee seriously while being friendly and very chilled out. They use Cornwall based Hands On coffee and make it very well. Also offer a great range of yummy cakes (famed for their gluten free selection) and brunches & lunches. Big thumbs up 😀
