Best-kept culinary secret in the Darlingtown.
Santorini Cafe & Restaurant at 44 Tubwell Row is our favorite place to eat in town because the owner and chef, Georgios Latousakis, sources the best quality ingredients and prepares his food with passion and love. Here is exceptional Greek cuisine taken to another level; his attention to detail and perfectionism are featured in every dish he creates. His baby back ribs are baked at low temperature for 7 hours, the tender, succulent meat falls off the bone. His latest creation is a “parmo” but not as you know it. (For those outside of the North East, “parmo” is a bastardization of chicken parmigiana) The meat is marinated for 12 hours and Georgios uses perfect béchamel and the cheese of your choice, in Nev’s case last night it was a 3 year old Stilton. Rather than frying twice, it is finished in the oven for a lighter, healthier dish. Moussaka, a frequently disappointing dish in other restaurants, exceeds all expectations, holding together with hearty consistency, the flavors melding together. Georgios makes his own bread, including a painstaking sourdough. He knows the grower of his organic rice, personally, as well as the farmer who supplies the award-winning eggs for his highly caffeinated and home-style tiramisu. His new offering is a beetroot slaw prepared with yogurt instead of the much-abused (in the UK at least) mayo and as a fan of slaw I know it is a hit. Georgios has worked in a three star Michelin restaurant in London, and was voted three years in a row best foreign chef in Beijing (“An Eternal Pot” is China’s ultimate cooking prize).
The unpretentious dining room has a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere, reminiscent of a seaside taverna on a Greek isle. Georgios is a warm and welcoming host, quick to share his enthusiasm for the food. Be sure to come hungry because the portions are generous and real value for money.
