We were there last Wednesday, and I can't do better than quote what my wife posted to her Facebook profile about our visit.
"The chef at Church Street Tavern never fails to surprise and delight me. I always forget how delicious the food is here until we go again after an extended absence. Whether it is the mashed lentil and garlic on tiny toast as a complimentary pre-dinner bite, the homemade bread with butter, or the baked alaska, honeycomb, and nougat for dessert, all of it is a taste riot on the tongue. One can forget how good food can taste when cooked well and in surprising combinations.
Last night was steak night and
Reg Webb
went for the rump with tomato/mayo relish (a fresh tomato concoction) and chips with rocket salad. Steaks are always paired with the wine of the evening. He was most pleased. I had plaice with shrimp, capers, and broad beans swimming happily together in a buttery olive oil and herb sauce. That and with a side of new potatoes and new spring onions, also buttery, I was a happy camper. YUM.
Serve all of that with wonderful staff and you have quite a winner here. I can't remember liking a restaurant half as well as I do these folks."
Great staff who provide a lovely relaxed atmosphere in a lovely old building. Nice and varied beer wine and spirits menu along with lovely local food. We are huge fans. Thanks guys.
