Dropped in for a pizza in the afternoon without a reservation and we were greeted warmly and seated promptly. The smell of ripe tomato sauce and gooey mozzarella being baked in the stone oven under fire was a salutation to the senses. The restaurant was filled with an enjoyable hum of talking and laughter, the sound of dough being chopped in the kitchen, and the familiar noise of plates and silverware being picked up and placed back down--all with faint Italian music playing in the background. The ambiance was a tasteful touch of sea foam blue painted on the wooden wall panels and with sturdy furniture equipped with red chili oils, salts and peppers, and different types of fresh herbs potted at each table. One table may have sage, another basil, the next coriander... a charming, subtle nod to the l'arte d'arrangiarsi ("the art of making something out of nothing") of pizza. The menu was simple and easy to navigate, nothing too blandly plain and nothing too overly adventurous. We ordered a pesto pizza and we asked for extra tomato sauce, to which our server happily assured would be made possible. To our amazement, it arrived at our table seconds after the oven and still sizzling! The pesto had a savory taste and was delightfully tangy, the tomato sauce was succulent and not at all watery, and the mozzarella was evenly distributed and reached every end of the dough. The best part, however, was the thick, soft consistency of the crust--not at all even the slightest burnt, but pulled from the oven at precisely the right time. A 1' x 1' ft perfectly presented pizza. That, with two fizzy drinks, for less that £20. Will be returning for the same thing, but with the intention of adding a little red wine.
Could not recommend this place enough!! Just what Mill Road needed, I hope the owner is as proud as he should be. The food, the atmosphere, the lovely lovely staff, such fantastic value for money... Simply superb!
