We were going to the Midlands to visit friends and family for the first time since Christmas and as part of the visit I decided that we'd take my mom out for a nice Sunday lunch.
She lives in Telford and I'm not familiar with the area so I relied on TripAdvisor for ideas. By which I mean I searched restaurants in the Telford area and sorted by rating; Clays of Broseley was top of the list and that was what I booked.
It's about a 20 minute drive from my mom's place through some beautiful Shropshire countryside.
We arrived in Broseley a little early and found a parking spot just outside the restaurant. We were invited to take a seat on the terrace whilst they were opening and had some drinks. I had a fantastic homemade lemonade made with sparkling water, my mom had a rhubarb juice that was so tasty we took 4 bottles home with us and my wife had a very nice pot of tea.
We had booked a table which had been laid out inside the restaurant for us but we were offered the table on the terrace for lunch which we gladly accepted as the weather was perfect. We all ordered from the lunch menu which at £19.95 for two courses and £23.95 for three courses was a fantastic bargain. I ordered Salmon and Hake fishcakes with tenderstem brocolli, asparagas and a white wine sauce and my wife and mom both ordered the Beef sirloin roast dinner. I was so impressed with the food. Honestly, this restaurant lives up to all the reviews. The ingredients were fresh and tasty and not plated pretentiously like you get some places.
For dessert, my mom and I both had the "Rhubarb and Custard" and playful dish which combined rhubarb compote, jelly, vanilla cream and little meringues. Stunning. The perfect end to any Spring afternoon lunch.
Throughout the meal, the staff (I'm sorry to say I didn't get their names) were attentive and friendly. Our 15 month old son, Henry, has a stinking cold and was teething so wasn't on his best behaviour but the staff were fantastic with him. They even went as far as bringing out one of their dogs, a beautiful, huge dog called Barney, for Henry's entertainment. To top it all, and this is massive for parents of small children, they had a full baby change unit, complete with nappies, wipes and nappy bags! I can honestly say I've never seen that anywhere else.
All in all, for three mains, two desserts and drinks, the bill came to less than £75! Needless to say, I intend to visit again when we're next in the area. I genuinely cannot wait.
We sat downstairs, the restaurant is lovely and cosy and contemporary. The staff were very welcoming and friendly. They didn't have a childrens menu but were able to make anything you wanted in a small portion from the menu which was ideal. The wine list is extensive.
The food, well I really couldn't fault it. It was stunning, we had crostini starter, a steak (a beef and a venison) for main and their famous white chocolate cheesecake for dessert. The steaks were cooked to perfection, they were absolutely beautiful. The sauce was so tasty. The starter was super tasty and so was dessert (which was a massive portion mmmmm).
There isn't even the slightest thing that lets it down, everything was perfect :)
Having known of Clays for some time now, I've never actually eaten here. I've heard how good it is, how very good it is from myriad people. So I thought I better get on with it and give this wee place a try.
Never, never ever have I eaten food so amazing (and I've eaten in a lot of places, far and wide), so beautifully presented, prepared with absolute dedication to each dish, so gently made (I have never ever known a chef so genuinely in touch with food as Charles) no banging and bashing, no rash sprinklings of seasoning, but gentle wafts of this and that.
Safe to say I am hooked.
Utterly beguiling to watch such dedicated craftsmen and women at work.
Thank you.
