I have been using this restaurant since it opened in Brighton and before that used the Lewes branch. It does a good range of vegetarian dishes and all of them that I have eaten are delicious. I understand from my meat eating friends they are good too. It is reasonably priced, excellent service and nice décor. Highly recommended and much better than most Indian restaurants.
We nearly cancelled our reservation after spotting several very negative reviews both on TripAdvisor and Google, but eventually we decided to go ahead, and I'm certainly glad we did. While the service was definitely a bit on the odd side (smiles were few and far between, dishes were placed on our table without much of an explanation, and the wait staff really didn't look too happy to be there), the food was very, very tasty and quite authentic. The mixed grill starter was extremely well seasoned and the chutneys and raita were fresh. The chilli paneer was also particularly good. The murg makhani was a bit on the sweet side but I think most would like it, while the prawn biryani definitely hit the spot. Am surprised that some people have commented on the portions being too small, they certainly felt more than enough and we left the restaurant feeling very full indeed. The service too was timely, we didn't end up waiting too long for meals or menus, so I'm not sure where the bad experiences are coming from. All in all, a very pleasant visit. Good Indian food at decent prices, and we will most likely return.
I love chaulas. Granted the one in Lewes is slightly better. The staff could be a bit more friendly & welcoming, but they know their dishes & can answer any of your questions, but you need to engage them first! There are quite a few vegan options on the menu & are all made to a Stirling standard. Baring these things in mind, I think anyone who visits would really enjoy their experience. A great little family run business.
