My first time here, and it was nothing short of perfect. A welcome smile from one of the cooks from the kitchen (viewable from the order area) and a friendly taking of the order followed by a read-back were appreciated. This was followed by a short wait before my chicken with green peppers and black bean sauce / fried rice arrived. I was surprised to see a complimentary small bag of prawn crackers attached on such a small order. There was nothing small about the portion though - the large box was bulging with food, and it tasted great with plenty well-cooked chicken. This will now be my new local takeaway establishment of choice.
Whilst staying in Kilbirnie after traveling from Bolton we dicided to have a Chinese takeaway. After looking at the local reviews we decided to go to Mr Chef.
We drove and collected the order
The street had on street parking bays which was convenient for parking.
Upon arrival the shop was cold in temperature and smelt damp. It was a little off putting but I imagine that this is because the shop was not heated and the heat and moisture from the kitchen was causing the air to be damp.
From the counter a lot of the kitchen could be seen and it apeard to be clean and well kept.
A young Scottish girl was serving at the counter. She was polite and took the order efficiently, reading back the order before completing it.
The staff in the kitchen were Chinese/oriental which is always a good sign that the food may be authentic. One of the kitchen staff came out with a 5ub of fortune cookies for my daughter once we ordered which was very nice and attentive.
The food was ready within about 15 minutes and was reasonably priced.
We ordered noodles, rice, salt and pepper prawns, salt and pepper chips, vegetable spring rolls, curry sauce and prawn crackers. I didn't try all the dishes personally.
The Singapore rice noodles were cooked dry, this is how I prefer them and not swimming in oil. The rice was on the dry side too but both were nice.
The salt and chilli chips were different than what we are accustomed to. Normally (in England) we get a more salty five spiced infused dish. These were more subtle but with a nice chilli flavour. They were very good and a nice change from the norm. The star of the show was the curry sauce. When I was younger we use to get beef curry from the local Chinese that was dark in colour, thick, spicy and slightly fruity in flavour. Unfortunately that trend died out and the sauce became less fruity, lighter and full of oil but the sauce from Mr Chef was just as I remembered it as a youngest which was a delight. I definitely recommend the curry sauce.
All in all this was a good tasting food and nice staff. Its definitely one for both the locals and visitors. We'll done Mr Chef.
Always a good meal and great price's
