The emphasis of the kitchen is on traditional food but it is delivered with an instinctive feel for the ingredients. All three dishes were expertly cooked and bursting with flavour. The positive impressions were reinforced by front of house staff who were all very friendly throughout my meal. It may be out of the way from where I was staying in West Cumbria but The Rat Inn was definitely worth making the detour for. I’d thoroughly recommend it and will definitely look to return on subsequent trips up north.

I heard good things about The Rat Inn and it certainly didn't disappoint. We were seared in the conservatory and it was lovely. Nice views down the valley. We had a starter and and main each. The food was lovely and the service was great. Wouldn't hesitate to call back again.

Fantastic country pub tucked away up the slopes of the Tyne Valley. Excellent food options with high quality, locally sourced ingredients and freshly prepared dishes. Great selection of drinks from the bar or wine list. Friendly but relaxed service in an busy but comfortable setting. Fine views across the hills and River Tyne from the beer garden and front windows. NB: Some seating is in the bar area which has plenty of hustle and bustle going on during busy evenings - not a problem but not as intimate as some tables. Well worth the trip out to Anick (not Alnwick!).
