I can not rate this highly enough! The hot pot was wonderful, the menu choice good, the food quality excellent, cleanliness fantastic and service absolutely wonderful.
We had no idea how the hot pot worked and one member of our party had a low spice tolerance but the staff were really wonderful, explaining clearly and answering all our questions, and we had quite a few.
All this would have been enough to warrant this review but then you add robot servers and food on conveyer belts and it just made the experience even better!
Honestly, if you are looking for a unique eating experience in York then I can not recommend this place highly enough.

Don’t be put off by the dated exterior, this restaurant is one of York’s hidden gems. The food was incredible and fresh with the two soups we had (chinese Kimchi & mushroom soup) tasting amazing and packed with flavour. The staff were incredibly friendly and informative and the robot waiter who delivered our food was a funny and unique touch!
We were in the restaurant for just under two hours cooking our own food and didn’t feel rushed at all and the bill at the end was incredibly good value.
Highly recommended to anyone visiting York!

If ya want a true orthentic style Chinese Hot pot, then Hai zhong lao is the place to visit without question.!!! 🤩😋..
First time eating at Hai Zhong Lao, and on first impression, the restaurant has a very modern Asian design inside with a great layout with individual booths / seating, which gives that bit more privacy to your dining experience. Staff were helpful and attentive, and more than happy to offer any assistance towards navigating your way around the menu.
Offering a wide array of traditional & orthenic foods from Asia style vegetable, fresh sea food or for the meat lovers an array different cuts & skewers. All freshly prepared ready for you to cook either in a hotpot broth of your choice or on the open air yakitori grill. Either way, it makes for an amazing interactive dining experience 🍽..
We tried the Spicey Beef fat an Red oil broth an just Wow!!!! That's cernatliny going shift any cold I might had!🥵🥵. Deffently would recommend for those fancying being that bit more adventurous an like there heat 🌶🔥.!!
The Szechuan pepper certainly leaves ya with a numb throat.. lol, fortunately, we also had the Beef Bone Broth, which was equily as nice, but deffently helped balance the meal!!. 🥵🍜..

Really good food here and large portions. Our food was delivered to our table by a robot. Good prices and would definitely come back here again. The food was full of flavour and still hot when the robot delivered it, check out the short video. Don’t forget to follow me for more honest reviews
My boyfriend and I passed this restaurant when we arrived for the first night of our holiday in York and its concept intrigued us. We were not disappointed!
The decor in the restaurant is lovely, especially the projector walls with the aquarium scene, and our waitress was really helpful and talked us through everything we needed to know about how the ordering worked.
We had never tried Chinese Hotpot before, and we had so much fun getting all our ingredients and cooking it all ourselves at our table! Everything we ordered went so well with our delicious soup bases, we could barely move after all the food!
We were also childishly excited when we ordered our extra toppings and they were delivered to us by a robot, such a fun night! Would love to go again!
From the second we walked in here, we knew that we had found a new favourite chinese restaurant.
the staff are very polite and friendly, they even showed us how to use the cooking equipment at our table which i was very impressed with!
the food is amazing and full of flavour!
They even have robots which bring you your food to the table and at first i couldn't work out how the robots would be accurate with moving around but they are razor sharp and it actually made the experience more exciting!
I couldn't recommend this place enough even if i tried!😁

I've been to Hai Zhong Lao multiple times with my partner and friends since mid April. The first time was for my birthday and we initially booked two/three tables for 12 of us and the manager Qin Yi was absolutely brilliant! She even decorated our tables with balloons and prepared a small cake for me when we got there 🍰 It was an amazing experience, we all enjoyed the food very much. For my friends who'd never had Chinese Hot Pot before, they absolutely loved it and said they'd definitely come back. One of my friends even made a TikTok video showcasing the whole experience from going in to the restaurant to the robot server.
The staffs are always very friendly and helpful, and everything is cleaned properly. You get to get your own extra cutlery and crockery and sauces. They also provide forks and spoons in case some customers can't use chopsticks. The restaurant is very modern but with a slight twist of Chinese culture (such as the Chinese roof decoration at the reception area). The best part is probably the robot servers which all my friends and myself love to bits!
I definitely recommend this restaurant for its staffs, food, drinks, and atmosphere ✨️ Will definitely come back!
First time trying hot pot. Staff were lovely and explained the best way to eat and make the complimentary sauces. Great value for money. We paid £37 and left completely full, we ordered extra half way through but really didn’t need to in the end so the bill could have been less if we weren’t as greedy!
The waiter also brought over some free icecream to keep our toddler occupied.
We will come back!

Didn't get to interact with the restaurant's serving robots (!), but the all-you-can-eat hotpot was superb and excellent value for money. So many different foods to try and a great choice of hotpot flavours.
I really enjoyed the Hot Pot and I took my boyfriend for the first time. He loved the food and he felt so super healthy with all of the fresh meat cuts, seafood, vegetables and the soup base. We didn’t need the rice or noodles much as it’s so filling! We spent about 2 hours there and we enjoyed in savouring the kelp seaweed and coconut drink!
The staff were very attentive and welcoming! We loved the waiting robot bring us the food we ordered! I can’t wait to come back!

First ever hotpot here. Very nice staff. Do ask them about what to do if you've never had a hotpot before. Also there are robots.
Me and my partner are both autistic, the waiter pick what we had to eat for us which is a great help as I was overwhelmed by the menu, they didn't bother us that much and they where nice and friendly! The background has lots of interesting moving images which would of helped if we had become overwhelmed. Only reason why I'm not giving a 5/5 is the price but as a one a year date it's not that bad
