I loved this pub. From the moment my friend and I went in we were made very welcome by Simon, the Manager. We were also really pleased that they sold Chardonnay and Pinot Grigio, as much to our surprise, not all the pubs in the centre of York had this. We met several of the locals who were also chatty and friendly and really made our afternoon. So much so in fact, that we went again the following day. We were sorry that we weren't staying long enough to spend an evening there, as the entertainment looked fab. Next time we visit York, we will definitely be paying a visit. Well done Simon on running a really special place.

It's become a bit of a tradition now that every time I visit my boyfriend in York we always head to the Three Legged Mare. The first time was back in early March when we were lured in by the sound of live violin and accordion, this is what a real pub should be like. Friday nights are the best with their new Folks band, had us both beaming from ear to ear (especially on Friday 01/04 when I heard "I wanna be like you", Jungle book). The barman and lady were both friendly and welcoming which made our night even better. Cannot wait to come back again :) *** P.S Great ale! Junie & Martin X

The last Black Sheep pub standing and it's such a good one too. A full range of Black Sheep ales and ciders were available along with a couple of guest beers were available when I visited. The staff were amazing, very friendly and knowledgeable about the beer. The beer was very well kept. I could have stayed there all afternoon watching people and drinking the beer.

Really nice place to pop in and have a pint. Didn't have any food, so I can not comment on that. The staff was very friendly and the beers were excellent. The Riggwelter was delicious! Will definitely stop by again the next time I'm in York.

I first came here after watching a game at York City twenty years ago and been a few times since. Boothroyd tells me that the Three Legged Mare was a hanging post for the times when having an opinion the ruling class hated was enough to hang you. Now coming back into fashion in the 2020's Woke State. Madge remembers it as a York Brewery bar but now Black Sheep .. two guest ales. I had a Half Moon Brewery Pale Ale. Long bar with another room to rear.

We didn’t eat here but enjoyed a fabulous Friday night being entertained by a huge Session of drop-in musicians. Everything from Irish reels, Old English laments, sea shanties and Appalachian banjo reels were played by an incredibly talented bunch of people. Thank you to the Three Legged Mare and those musicians for making our first night in York the best ever! Hubby went back a few days later when there was no music and enjoyed the atmosphere there. It’s relaxed and friendly. Definitely gong back.

Situated close to York's glorious Minster, I found it a very pleasant bar to shelter from the rain on a quiet lunchtime. Though it is not intended as a meal provider I always find it disappointing when a pub only serves crisps etc. & a few people came in and immediately left due to no proper food. Still, seems like a good venue and live music evenings sound like they're worth a visit. My pint of Black Sheep Bitter was in good condition and the lass serving was helpful. As with most pubs these days I couldn't afford more than a pint or two due to the eye-watering cost, which isn't the pub's fault - in most cases.

Great cider choice and good beer choice. Black Sheep was very good. Salt Water Taffy Brass Castle was less to my taste.

Great cask selection and a brilliant choice of ciders. Very friendly place and the landlord was extremely helpful and knowledgeable. Had some live acoustic music (at a very mellow level) on the bank Holiday Monday we were there. Overall a great place to visit when in York.
