A great little cafe to pop into for lunch! Service was a little slower than expected, but it looked like a very small kitchen. Food was lovely, with lots of pastries and sandwiches on the menu. The decor is nice and cosy too, so it'd be easy to spend ages here.
As a regular visitor to York I have my favourite cafes, but today I decided to try somewhere different: The Newgate Coffee Bar which is along one edge of the Market.
It has lots to recommend it: quirky decor, low beamed ceilings and a good menu choice-that said, I think that it perhaps appeals to a tourist market, or those looking for somewhere relaxed. It’s the complete opposite to cafes such as Cafe Nero or similar - sitting working on a laptop is a no, no! I think this is absolutely right for this cafe; it has a cosy vibe for a more leisurely coffee or meal.
I sat at a corner table which gave me a great view of the outside seating area complete with table tennis table whilst I watched birds using the feeders in the tree nearby.
The toilet facilities and more seating are on the first floor via a rather steep staircase decorated with items for sale:Green Man wares, framed photography etc
Card payment only and also dog friendly.
Friendly staff, delicious pancakes with good quality bacon (worth mentioning as it's not always the case) and excellent coffee. Good value 'morning fix' for £8.99 - breakfasts item and drink. Great ambience- no WiFi and laptops are not welcome. Highly recommended.
Wunderbares kleines Café in absolut zentraler Lage. Sehr gemütlich, vor allem in der unteren Etage. Heimeilige Atmosphäre und tolle Kuchen. Immer einen gemütlichen Stop wert (witzige Toiletten übrigens).

Wonderful little café in an absolutely central location. Very cozy, especially on the lower floor. Homely atmosphere and great cakes. Always worth a leisurely stop (fun toilets, by the way).
Popped in today and just caught the breakfast deal, lovely sunny spot outside to dog watch
Pancakes were amazinggggg and the staff were so sweet. We will definitely be back
Looking for coffee in York and we popped in here. Very friendly staff and a very good cup of coffee. The muffin was okay but nothing outstanding.

A lovely place to stop and have a brew and a cake
Came here with my wife to get out of the rain and was pleasantly surprised. I'm not normally a cafe goer but I really liked the quiet and relaxed vibe this place gave off. The staff are nice and pleasant and the prices are good. There is a surprising amount of choice on the menu from burritos to cakes.
I had the carrot cake (which was bloody delicious) and a pot of tea and my wife had an Iced tea and a fruit scone.
Would definitely recommend if you're looking for a quiet place to relax after a busy day shopping and sight seeing in york
Cute little cafe. Had the African wrap (i think it was called) had chicken, feta, avocado and other stuff in. Got lots of doritos on the side. The others in my group had date and walnut scones which they said were very good. Good location.
Great cafe with lots of variety of drinks. Fab food great panini if you want a snack. The cakes look delicious and lovely friendly staff.
This is a lovely dog friendly cafe , the staff are exceptionally friendly and helpful and the food is excellent.
