The Black Swan couldn't have been more perfect. A beautiful 15th century house converted into a pub and inn, you can feel the history seeping into you while you sit in front of the incredible hearth. My husband and I stopped in on our last night in York and lamented not finding it sooner. It is one of those places where you know you would feel at home every time you walk through the door. We ended up spending a couple of hours talking with the owner, Andy, his wonderful girlfriend Maggs (who is also head chef), and some of their friends. The atmosphere couldn't have been more welcoming or warm, and the ales were delicious and cellar cool.
I really hope to return to York, and when we do, this is the first place we will go!
We had read good reviews of the Black Swan before coming to York. We were not disappointed. The atmosphere of this 600 year old free house transports one back in time. The ploughman's lunch was a nice combo of cheeses, meats and chutneys with crusty warm bread and salad. It was huge and my husband and I could have easily shared. All portions were extremely generous and everyone in our party were very happy with their choices. Highly recommend!
We really enjoyed the atmosphere in this quaint cozy pub. We both ordered a version of Yorkshire pudding. My daughter ordered bangers and mash while I partook of the traditional roast beef and mashed potatoes. Both entrees were served with ample portions and a side of peas. We dined at 5:30 PM and it was not crowded. To order, one must go to the bar to place. It was a great English pub dining experience.
This pub is a little off the beaten path but it is worth a visit. It was among the best pub food I ever had, if not the best. I ordered the steak and stilton pie with chips and mushy peas. My mom had the cottage pie. My sister got the rabbit stew. All were hearty, delicious, and the portions were generous. The lady working at the bar to take our order was very friendly, attentive, and accommodating to our request for mushy peas rather than the standard garden peas that accompanied the dishes. Overall, great service and outstanding food in a cozy environment. An absolute must if you're in York.
Lovely, friendly, cosy pub with a massive fireplace and a decent selection of ales and nice standard food.
Yorkshire puddings were not out of the freezer, but fresh-made. Gravy succulent. Pies of a good standard. Shortcrust solid.
Prepare to be transported.
I could sit in this pub for hours (I DID sit in this pub for hours) and never get tired of it. The building itself is amazing and the pub boasts a large open stone fireplace with dim lighting which creates the most enjoyable ambiance. There are plenty of real ales on draft and the staff is lovely.
The Black Swan is one of the oldest pubs in York and is rumoured to be the place where Dick Turpin himself was finaly caught! It is said that he thundered up the staircase leaving them permanatly damaged and they are to this day very uneven! so be carefull coming up or down them if you've had a couple of drinks!
The Black Swan offers a variety of beers wines and spirits and there's aways a tempting guest ale to try. They serve lunchtime home cooked food, at a reasonable price and it never fails to be very tasty!
Situtated on the outskirts of York, it's a great place to go for a quiet drink, and unlike most pubs in the city centre, it has the advantage of having it's own carpark.
Locals pub. A bit expensive, and when we went there it smelled of paint.
One of the oldest, and oldest-looking, pubs in York. It is well worth visiting for the 17th century interior alone. However, it also offers a modest range of real ales, a grand fireplace, and folk music upstairs every Thursday. It is only a short walk from the city centre, but generally peaceful because of this.
Good old atmosphere and nice people. And one of the pub staff is ultra handsome, think call Micheal , not sure anyway. And believe he just work part time
