Wow. The Camembert beet pie was better than any pie I ate in the two years I lived in the midlands. The meat pie was super good and filling. A couple of family members split that.
The atmosphere was very comfortable, nice, and historic. I was amazed the place wasn't packed! This is on my definite must visit list when I come back to York
Awesome pub to through back a few pints and chill with great people , sit back relax enjoy the cool vibe !
This place is beautifully old, with wooden paneling and that sense of a true british pub with a good old fire.
We had popped in for a quick drink , I was so delighted of the many different ales and craft beers on and off tap ..the staff were just as homely as the pub :)
While Sat down next to the warming fire we eyed up these giant platters going back to and fro filled with Sunday roast tasties.. it was then I vowed to come back..
We had planned to check out the Chinese with a friend but after a no show we retraced our steps. Unfortunately the Sunday roasts sell out FAST so you have to be quick. Unfortunately we were not fast enough..
To be honest I then struggled to decide what to have ,I Mean the fish and chips looked fab but the portion was intimidating..so I opted for a red pepper soup and a veggie version of fish and chips. The fish was substituted with Hallumi and for an extra pound I upgraded my fries to sweet potato...
The wait wasn't bad and the chef personally delivered our food . However when he went away I realised that they had forgotten to upgrade my fries..I wouldn't have minded as much but these weren't homemade..which is a shame as everything else here oozes with home made stuff .. the manageress was so apologetic and came back several times to ensure we were enjoying the meal..
The soup had been nice but forgettable, the halloumi cheese was a great idea for a battered cod substitute..my other halfs pie was also fantastically made...
I rate this place highly for the service, ambiance and drink selection..however I was let down by the food slightly..I would defiantly try and grab a roast dinner though.
Hidden off the beaten track. Very nice place. Serves decent beer and the food is very good.
On a busy day, it can be fairly tight. But still worth going in.
The oldest pub in York. I highly recommend eating here on a Sunday for the Sunday dinner but caution you to come early as they run out quickly. Also the steak pie and fish & chips are good as well. This is another place where you take note of your table number and order at the bar. Some of the tables in the front room are a bit wobbly so be careful with your drinks.
The sign across the middle of the road, drawing your attention to this pub, is something I have never seen before.
Its a nice pub with lots of different rooms, but can get quite cramped! Must have been horrible when it was being used to house wounded soldiers during the English civil war. Yes it is that old!
Fairytale of New York from Kelham Island was a decent dark beer and not too strong at a safe but tasty 4.2pc
Clearly an institution with history and rustic charm that doesn't need explanation. Tucked behind a few buildings, you walk through a bit of an alley into the courtyard and then into the warm, cozy pub. Multiple rooms to suite your needs whether by yourself or in a group. Solid array of draft and cask options. A bit pricey but a place like this needs to be preserved.
A centuries old pub right in the heart of York. Excellent quality food and a decent lineup of beers and real ales. You can feel the history of the place as soon as you walk in. A nice atmosphere and reasonable prices for food though the drinks are a bit pricey. Definitely worth a visit.
Brilliant experience and absolutely would go again if I'm ever in York. Not only is the rusticity of the food and the pub itself comforting for any time of day, the food itself is spot on. The classic steak and ale pie was perfect, and is one of the best, if not, the best steak and ale pie I've had. The chips are very nicely done and it's overall a hearty meal that'll certainly fill you up, whilst maintaining some balance. If you've got room, the sticky toffee pudding is also lovely - very rich and delectable, whilst still being a simple dish. However, the best part might be the very reasonable price for the food. The portions are more than generous for the amount you pay, and this is not always the case at pubs. Last but not least, the staff are also very friendly and helpful, making this an all-round outstanding pub.
Popped in here Sunday evening, found a lovely little spot. Great food, delivered quickly, piping hot and exactly as ordered. Pricing was really reasonable for York, and definitely worth a visit if you don’t want to pay normal York prices, this is definitely underrated and overlooked I think. Really pleased we found it… ticked all the boxes we were looking for, and a proper historic little spot too …. Definitely one to consider
Lovely medieval old pub, slanted roof's, crooked doorways, old wooden floors, windows slanted, arched entrance way into a lovely court yard.
We had Christmas day here with the family, my wife booked the table with the help of John (manager) , he looked after every single detail for our time here, arranged for us to have a cosy corner, the food altered (for the kids), John's customer service is outstanding, we seriously all had the best Christmas ever thanks to John.
The food was tip top, tasty exactly how we would want a big Christmas Roast. Zero complaints, the kids loved it....
If I could give more than 5⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I would...
Lovely place and would definitely highly recommend to families, couple's..
Loved it. Just in the mood for a rustic pie, and there were obviously loads of choices in York but I'm certain we made the right choice. Steak and Ale pie with chips was delicious. Generous portion and reasonably priced, and didn'thave to wait long at all for it to be served. Good selection of drinks too.
Claims to be from 1644, during the English Civil War and thus the oldest pub in York. ( When the Woke Puritans killed you for being happy.) Been a few times but gets crammed with tourists. A good selection of real ales. Mainly Greene King but good guest ales. Boothroyd had the house bitter. Madge a good pinot blush...a glass..not a pint.. The sign that crosses the road in one of only a few left in England. ( One in Stamford, Lincolnshire we visited in 2018.) Lovely interior when not crammed. Several rooms and outside seating wraps around the pub.
This was a lovely pub with plenty of outdoor and indoor seating. Also it's extremely DOG friendly!
I highly recommend the classic steak and ale pie along with a proper lager. Also the mac and cheese was UNBELIEVABLE.
Pro-tip: Try to visit York during the week and not the weekend in the autumn. The restaurants and sights won't be too crowded.
We came here on a Tuesday evening - the pub was out of a lot of dishes but that didn’t affect our order. The Greene King pub boasts a lot of craft ales and lagers and a medium house wine 🍷 was a steal at £5.40. I’d recommend the burger 🍔
Excellent pub, very good choice of both food and drinks, good atmosphere, there on Monday evening and busy
Come here all the time, one of my favourite places. Staff are great, everyone is friendly, has great beer and excellent food, reasonably priced in historic surroundings. Inside or out, in the many beer gardens, it is extremely comfortable.
Great place for a quick pitstop for a snack in the oldest inn in York. Great atmosphere with plenty of character, friendly staff and the food was great, recommended!
We had baked camembert and garlic bread, perrrrfect. Food came very quickly and was exactly what we needed! Love the vibe, music is not too loud like many pubs, easily had conversations even right next to the speakers. Well priced drinks. Our food, mulled wine and a pint was £21
A friend and I were on a trip to York, this place sounded good as it was an old Ale house. We went for the classic British Pie & mash, the service was great, fast and professional. The food was served in good time, and they were busy too. Food was very good, a decent pie, I liked the grilled cabbage also, mash wah good along with a little pan of extra gravy. Couldn't fault the place or the service, good job everyone that works there 😎👍👌
Grand Old Yorkshire Pub, great staff and atmosphere, food looked good, but I didn't eat there.
Excellent visit during the Christmas Markets, team were great as was the food.
Visiting York for the first time as a family we weren't sure where to choose for food and drink in advance, but we are very glad we ate here. Really pleasant service that was not overbearing at all, very good quality pub grub and a super choice of real ales too. I'd say we have about 1878 reasons to return.
Really enjoyed our visit to the Ye Olde Starre Inne, friendly staff, really nice food and just a lovely old Inne , many thanks
