Beautiful inside, friendly service and good food . A basic menu but decent quality. Don't just stay downstairs, explore! Listed as one of Yorks most haunted pubs, they play to this well without being naff. Just go for an explore around the whole building and discover all the scary 'Easter eggs' located in nooks and crannies all over the place.
Lovely place! Came to York for a short visit and this place was recommended by a local. Great service. They customized my food - Ordered the Yorkshire Rarebit and the be very friendly girl behind the bar replaced the bacon with tomatoes for me when I said I didn’t eat bacon. She also gave me genuine suggestions on foods when I said I couldn’t tolerate alcohol - she double checked and told me the stew had alcohol in it so safer for avoid it. Enjoyed the food! Beer cheese was tasty but also made the food too salty.

A great tap room in central York. Their beer selection is impressive and they also serve hot food. I really enjoyed their signature cheese soup.
Just brilliant!!! Quirky, incredible selection of ales and tapas - but be careful, in Spain tapas size portions need three for a meal - here you only need one! So many rooms to choose from and SO many entertaining touches! We’ll be back! 💃🕺
I came back today and was welcomed and served by Theo. And the food is as good as ever!! 🤠
We went here for the evening reception of a friends wedding.
I can’t speak highly enough of the service we got. The manager (I think) Harrison, and his team went way above & beyond. They were short staffed but food appeared on time. They were friendly, polite and extremely efficient. A great team.
The buffet was way above average, really good falafel. Beer choice and quality is very good, good value too. Nice atmosphere & decor, good location. Highly recommend.
After realising the wife had a few shops she wanted to browse in York me and dog decided on this place to hold down the vault. Luckily a recent tap take over had occurred. Basqueland brewery and apparently the chief honcho flew over from Spain to be part of it. York has amazing architecture and this building comes up trumps. Bar upstairs is the secret abyss with a very informative barmaid
Delightfully fun and eclectic building with some richly decorated rooms. The food is typical pub style and quite reasonable. We had a 45 minute wait on food so ordered a pork pie whilst we wait - that arrived after the food, which they still tried to make us have. A kitchen mistake was blamed (they were busy) but no apology. A shame as it was otherwise great! Located opposite the Judges Lodgings hotel and two mins walk from Betty’s Tearoom.
First time visiting this place. Staff absolutely fantastic. Food portions are unbelievable. I do recommend this wholeheartedly. Go see. You never be stuck for a choice of ale or beer.
Been here a few times for both lunch and evening drinks. Really cosy atmosphere, friendly staff and the food is very tasty and rustic with generous portion sizes. The beer and cheese soup is amazing! Always had a lovely experience here every time we've been.
Fantastic place to eat and drink. The beer was great, and the food was excellent. Staff were very helpful. I would highly recommend it
