Super friendly professional staff, stayed in The Shambles Room.... Very large room, decor and furniture great and fitting to period of inn. Bed super comfy. Great night's sleep, quiet outside through night even with window open all night. Room definitely haunted!
bathroom, fantastic large shower, separate free standing roll top bath, lovely fireplace surrounds in bathroom and bedroom. Definitely will staff again.
Stopped in for lunch one day after getting through the Shambles at one of it's busier moments. The pub has so much history and it's great to see that it still has most of its historical features. Service was good, and we were served quickly despite quite a few orders coming in directly after ours. The special limited blends of gin, vodka, and other alcohols are definitely worth checking out. The food was the only thing letting the place down. Nothing was bad as such, just not that good. The wings and fries I had seemed like they came straight out of the freezer and were a bit too crispy/overcooked, but still edible at least.
I was pleasantly surprised with our top floor room! It was an extremely spacious suite and a great view over the Shambles. It has buckets of character which adds to the charm.
Staff were friendly and left us to it. We didn't hear any noise from downstairs or outside.
Only disappointment was the lack of ghostly activity!
We have just got back from an Easter bank holiday stay in York. I would highly recommend a visit here. We booked online before we went to York. Fantastic experience from start to finish. It was mad busy but our table was there for us. The food was excellent and very reasonably priced. The whole place was mesmerising. I could have sat there all night. We are already talking about when we can go back. Big well-done to the staff they are a credit to you
Very impressed with our lunch at the golden fleece. The staff are lovely, and the food was exceptional! The only let down would be that there were glasses everywhere, and had clearly not been cleared for some time. I understand that the place can get very busy, and it seemed hugely popular at the time that we entered, so this wont be lowering our score of 5stars. We are already planning another trip back to York, and the Golden fleece will be the a place we will be returning to.

The Golden Fleece is a pub with rooms. As long as you understand that at the outset you will appreciate that normal hotel rules don't apply. The pub is very very old and it was last decorated when Shakespeare was a lad..... It is very atmospheric and darkly attractive if you have an interest in the occult or fancy yourself a Gothic fan. I am a pensioner and was there with my friend who loves a ghost story or better yet, a spectral experience!! We didn't have any ghostly experiences but Lady Peckets room was warm and gothically welcoming. We loved it. The shower room was a disappointment after the style of the bedroom but it was clean and the water was very hot!! All of the floors in the pub are uneven. Everything slopes and I must have looked like Jack Sparrow as I negotiated the stairs and the very sloping bedroom floors. The pub noises were hardly noticed once we went upstairs and we never heard any other guests. The meals in the bar are pretty average for pub food but the breakfast menu can be anything you like. We had the Traditional breakfast which is a small version of the full English. All in all, a good experience.
Ordered 2 burgers, chunky chips with garlic bread. Was cooked to perfection. Brownie was delish too (little stingy on the ice cream though).

we visited this pub solely because we heard it was haunted but we were pleasantly surprised at how nice it is. a very cosy atmosphere and the drinks were reasonably priced. the staff were very helpful as well

There are so many great pubs in York, but it is always a treat to stop in and be served by someone as wonderful as Kym at the Golden Fleece. Service really matters and Kym provides that above all. Nice to see such great service.
Oh my word what can I say. The staff at the Golden Fleece are so friendly. Our room The shambles is stunning clean and comfortable and has recently been refurbished. Wow you should see the bathroom. Yet to see the night through and for any sppokie visitors to say boo. I'm here celebrating my 60th and have been presented with a card and a bottle of sparkles whilst being shown to our table. Cant wait for the night to begin. Will definitely come back again.
We visited here, and I felt a presence when I walked through the door as I'm a paranormal investigator. But the staff, the food and the bar all amazing can't wait to go again maybe stay the night.
Our food was phenomenal and absolutely made up for the bar staff who didn't notice our app order, though the disco and house music definitely spoiled the vibe of the "most haunted pub in York". Fantastic decor.
Another great pub steeped in York history. Apparently, the most haunted pub in York . Lots of stories and newspaper cuttings on the walls about the place . Interesting reading, not seen one of the ghosts yet though.
Great pub if u can negotiate your way through the well walked through into the back bar via sloping floors making it feel well walked route. Great beers too
