I went yesterday to have a peaceful coffee. The sweet lady staff was inviting and a happy face. Coffee was bitter to right taste. The decor is retro . The scone and goat cheese was yum. The hidden piece of chocolate behind my cup was smooth and melted in me. The washroom is homely n unusually comfortable. Unique place where you can be you-nique. Zs
Wonderful place the staff can't do enough to be accommodating, they are very good with allergies and the food is to die for. We have to go every few months for the chocolate afternoon tea - delicious.
My mum treated me to a chocolate afternoon tea for my birthday. We really enjoyed it, everything had chocolate on it even the savoury food and it worked so well. The hot chocolate drink was delicious too! Will definitely come back and recommend to anyone who is wanting something a little different ���
Thought I'd treat my mum for an early mother's day afternoon tea and it was amazing. We both had a brilliant time, enjoyed delicious food and we were both raving on about the Belgian white hot chocolates hours after. Had the best cup of Hot chocolate I've ever had � and watched them make it, with actual chocolate and hot milk! � literally 10/10, I was on my own and was truly, honestly-the most comforting and calming experience ever � so good! Thank you, will be back again! � X
If you love everything chocolate, this place is a chocoholics dream. Warm and inviting, with friendly staff and the most delicious hot chocolate. I will definitely return the next time I'm in York.
Ordered the meat and cheese platter for two and an impossible amount of food arrived, but we did manage to make a sizeable dent in it. The choices of bread, cheese, meats and chutneys were excellent. This was accompanied by a huge luxury hot chocolate each, mine being the dark chocolate with chilli. Let me tell you, the hot chocolate is a life-changing experience. You have not had hot chocolate if you have not been here. All the chocolates available too, many as free samples, are also stunning. I'd make a trip to York just for this.
It was my first visit and I had the Afternoon Tea, which was absolutely amazing! I would highly recommend a visit!

Don't bother queuing for Betty's Tea Room! The York Cocoa House is well worth a visit. I had the Orange Hot Chocolate with some White Chocolate Dipped Shortbread. They were both excellent and not too sweet. We also had a Chocolate on the side with our drinks which I thought was a nice touch. The service was also very good. We went back to the shop before we left York and bought some chocolates to bring home. Looking forward to tucking into those!!
Always a pleasure to pay a visit to the York Cocoa House. The hot chocolate is to die for. Very busy and lucky to get a table, but worth the wait.

Oh man, chocoholics have died and gone to heaven in this place. Cozy tea room serving sweets and savory dishes. Now here's the thing: every single menu item uses chocolate as a key ingredient. For some of them, it makes for some unusual and unexpected flavor combinations.
We were there for the chocolate making workshop, a loving celebration of the craft of making chocolate bars. It was led by one of the chefs responsible for new truffles and bars. For one hour she walked us through the steps for making and tempering chocolate, from cacao bean all the way to finished bars. We tasted dark, milk, and white chocolate. Each participant gets to make their own nicely sized chocolate bar, decorated individually. The process is something that you could easily reproduce at home (hair dryers!). The history of chocolate and York's production of it, while there to learn about, is not emphasized in this particular class. Instead, the hands-on experience and tasting is, and that's what we came for.
We didn't get a chance to try them for lunch or afternoon tea, but it looked fantastic. We did have a little treat after the class -- hot chocolate for the kids, a chocolate stout for the parents, and a chocolate and salted caramel torte that was absolutely decadent and delicious. Definitely worth a stop!
Wow, what an experience!! We went in by pure coincidence and had the best time. Saturday afternoon, cold, lightly rainy, walked around York just taking in the sights and walk into Chocolate. We signed up for the tour and were able to learn about chocolate, how it's made, it's origins and the story behind several.of the chocolates in the world. Serena, our guide, was very knowledgeable and really made our experience súper. You can see she really loves what she does. We got.to try several types of chocolate and at the end even made our very own chocolate lollipop. Last stop a demonstration on how to make chocolate bon bons. If you are a chocolate lover I highly recommend this stop. If you are not offered a special on a hot chocolate before going in, definitely get one on the way out. We were so impressed that went by there the before getting on the train for our ride back to London.

First, just wow! Their hot chocolate is simply amazing. It's quite cute inside, too. They offer classes to make chocolate truffles, lollipops, bars and figurines. They also seemed to have a supper club around the holidays. That had passed by the time I arrived. For classes, seems t would be good to contact them for days/times as they're listed on a chalkboard and may change. The Tumaco hot chocolate was suggested to me. It was 65% solid chocolate and not too sweet. It came with a Liquid Carmel truffle on the side. The chocolate was amazing.
They also have pastries and other sweets you can order with your drink. This seemed a bit more sweet than I could handle, so I thought to get something savory from their savory menu; mind you all these savory items are ALSO made with chocolate in them. However, the soup of the day, a Tomato Bisque, was more like a warm gazpacho (all veggies, no cream). I was told the white chocolate added into it made it more creamy, but there was nothing creamy about it. It also had no salt. Very bland.
While I appreciate the idea of adding chocolate to everything, I'd suggest having savory items that might compliment the hot chocolate, or give non-chocolate lovers visiting with their chocoholic friends, rather than trying to add more chocolate to them. A soft pretzel with salt would have been lovely with a side of Carmel or chocolate, or even with mustard for people who don't want sweet. Alternatively, goat cheese toast with various savory toppings (avocado, pesto, roasted tomato, etc) would be a nice balance.
The hot chocolate and truffle were amazing. The service was ok. The savory dish is skip completely.

We stopped here on a rainy afternoon in York and were thrilled to sit out the rain in a lovely, quaint room and have some delicious chocolate! Didn't try any of the food, though it all looked pretty delicious, but had some truly amazing hot cocoa, and sampled a few of the specialty chocolates. There was a huge range of types of hot cocoa, from their house hot cocoa to varying degrees of dark chocolate hot cocoa, and all of them sounded amazing.
I ordered the "luxury" version of their house hot cocoa (the "luxury" version had marshmallows and extra chocolate shavings), and my friend ordered a hot cocoa with mint liqueur. We both thoroughly enjoyed our drinks, and it was a perfect way to spend our last hour in York.
The only reason I didn't give 5 stars was that when they got crowded, they seemed to be a bit disorganized and overwhelmed. We checked in to be seated, then were overlooked for a bit because we were standing off to the side to be out of the way. But things got sorted soon enough and the rest of our visit was great.
Next time I'm in York, I will definitely go back for their "afternoon chocolate," an afternoon tea-type deal with scones, etc. They also have flavored hot chocolates, with any of the flavors of chocolate they make - orange, chili, peppermint, caramel - the choices seem endless and slightly overwhelming! You can also get it with tea or coffee, if you're not a choco-holic, but I'd definitely recommend the hot cocoa!
Chocolate lovers rejoice! For in the York Cocoa House EVERYTHING comes with chocolate.
Hot chocolate, chocolate meringues, chocolate dipped shortbread, truffles, buttons, shards, chocolate chilli, and cocoa nib goats cheese scones abound! This place can get pretty hectic on the weekends, so I'd advise visiting at off peak times to avoid the claustrophobia (this place is not huge).
The staff are all lovely here, and the service is good. As its waitress service I think it would be better to explain that you pay at the shop till when you're done, would have saved us time trying to get the busy waitresses attention, and freed up our table quicker.
Don't forget to pick up some Parkin truffles on your way out!

OK, I don't usually go for the full five stars from an initial visit, especially one that was as brief as this, but I was sorely tempted to do so after trying out York Cocoa House. My word, you guys. I'm not one of those that considers themselves a 'chocoholic'. Sure, I get a wee craving every now and then, but I don't think about it much - so when I do have an inkling to indulge, I like it to be super worth it.
This is super worth it.
For starters, the shop feels like some kind of Victorian tea room. Everything about the café is quaint - you'll find little knick knacks decorating the space, cute little tables, a counter with the most exquisite looking cakes, tubs of chocolates, and trimmings all around. The Willy Wonka-esque vibe is infectious, and I'm sure that the ladies serving me found my joy rather amusing - I was being particularly squealy and high pitched. It's very exciting.
So, my reason for visiting was a tip off from fellow Yelper Anna F, so I am indebted to her for the nudge. Tori W and I, whilst nipping over to see our York Yelp friends (Nik H too!) *just* made it over to these guys before close. We picked the traditional hot chocolate and the white chocolate, to go halfsies on, so we could try each one. All I can say is 'wow'. They fill up half a cup with chocolate buttons, for starters, and then topped the drinks up with delicious hot chocolate mix.
I think they cost about £3 ish for a standard sized cup, which is pretty fair, and there's even treats on the counter to try. If you're in York, or even looking for an excuse to visit, it has to be done! We enjoyed ours whilst having a glorious late afternoon wander, and there couldn't be a better way to enjoy the city on a wintry evening. Sweet, smooth, more-ish, full on chocolatey, and delectably yummy. Do it immediately!

This has to be one of my favourite coffee/tea/chocolate rooms in York for mainly two reasons:
1. it serves probably the yummiest hot chocolate in town
2. it stays open past 4, for us of a southern Med disposition who enjoy going for a coffee after work.
York Cocoa House is proud of their chocolate and their shop and it shows. There is a wide selection to please all palates (as well as tea for those who just fancy a cuppa!) and I have to say the brownies are divine here! Currently my favourite chocolate is Madagascar but if you are stumped for a decision (or just want everything) the staff are very knowledgeable and and friendly to assist in your choice!
Recommend to both visitors and residents, and well done cocoa house for bringing up the chocolate standard in York and carrying it's sweet tradition in such a great way!
I attended the Easter egg making workshop and like the previous workshops I’ve done here it was a lot of fun. This time though it was late starting due to the family that was also in the workshop arriving late. While I waited I was allowed to join the tour the shop also does at no extra charge which I appreciated.
The woman running the workshop was friendly, very informative and offered advice when needed/asked for. My egg came out better than eggspected.
The family that were also there were asked to leave for valid reasons. It’s reassuring the store takes health and safety seriously.
While she dealt with the family another worker took over the workshop, as I was on my own that meant 1-1 session. He too had great advice particularly with piping and decorating the egg.
Definitely worth doing the workshops. It’s the third one I’ve done with them and will definitely be doing more in the future.
Amazing micro chocolate factory. They are highly educated on things chocolate. They make the most amazing single origin chocolate. Great tasting chocolate, great experiences such as chocolate bar making and tour. very nice staff too.
This experience (chocolate manufacturing and tasting journey) was absolutely fantastic. My tour was run by Jacob (I think that was his name) and he was very knowledgeable and explained all aspects of cocoa manufacturing and production in great detail but in ways that made it very easy to understand. The tasting experience was an absolute delight, the locations and types of cocoa bean were explained thoroughly and how to taste the chocolate using your palate and all your senses truly was fascinating. The downside was that the shop had no items that were advertised and most of the group left without making a purchase. It is what it is, because our guide really was brilliant. He made the experience worth it and I'd be delighted to return when I'm next in York.

Molly, our instructor, was amazing, who knew you could melt chocolate with a hair dryer. Would highly recommend.
Best thing in York, no contest. We make sure to stop by every time we visit. The hot chocolates are outstanding. I normally prefer dark chocolate, but here even the white chocolate is mind-blowingly delicious. The specialty drinks like the chocolate shot are also worth a try. We did a chocolate bar making workshop as well where we learned about how chocolate is made and melted and moulded our own bars, definitely a highlight of our visit to York. They're great about allergens too with lots of vegan and gluten free options.
BEST HOT CHOCOLATE EVER. This is the tastiest drink I have ever had ! I could not recommend this amazing place more. So satisfying and tasty. You can choose you percentage of chocolate and they melt it for you. They also offer European style hot chocolate and chocolate shots.

As a cafe this place is amazing with the plethora of CHOCOLATE options it gives. The cookie and brownies were amazing simply because of the chocolate and not in the nature of the dessert itself. The chocolate being freshly made there has its added perks to the amazing time a chocolate lover could have here.
Coming to the chocolate manufacturing and tasting (in May 2023 - the time I visited it) it costs nearly £10 per person. On the whole the experience was nice - not great - but worth the knowledge for people interested. However the cost to experience and tasting ratio is something I would question, but credit the idea put forth by the staff and workers of the Cocoa works.
I would recommend to try it, surely for chocolate lovers, but also for people who are interested in the chemical gastronomy of chocolate or even would like to simply learn about it. I would not recommend it for children as the chocolate is not the sweet type we generally give kids (though it is served as a piece in the platter) it has more of the darker and intense flavours that kids may not like.
Personally I loved the experience.
Is the experience worth the money? I would say No. It's quite nice to see them taking you around their tiny mini factory setup. Pretty cute. Our guide was really passionate about chocolate and it was nice to see someone who enjoy doing these. Wish they had given more products to taste for what we pay. They do these tours in groups and let you taste different grades of chocolate depending on their level of cocoa, sugar and milk contents.
There is a little cafe inside the place as well. They give u 10% discount when u get the tour. In my opinion atleast one chocolate bar could have been given as a complimentary gift 😂 overall it's a cute experience. Would have recommended for kids but they would not enjoy the bitter dark chocolate.

Very friendly staff and excellent hot chocolate! Don’t make the mistake i did and order a 70% hot chocolate unless you like bitter hot chocolate! I should have asked staff about it before i ordered! Reordered something more suitable for me and it was amazing! Very cozy setting with comfortable seating, blankets and some books to read.
Bought a York pass and booked our slots through the link. Thoroughly enjoyed this experience. Very informative lovely guide answered all questions. Chocolate is divine and interesting to taste the difference between the cocoa beans. Very well done to the team and the company
