This place was a pleasant surprise. Right next to a cool bridge, I stopped by for a late night pint and was happy to stumble into some live music and a lively pub. Friendly staff, some good cask ales and draft beers, and even a few ciders and an English Perry! I decided to for a pint of the Perry and it was truly delicious. Might have been my first one ever. Anyway, bit of an older crowd but it was a fun stop and when the patio is open it's likely even better.

Great pub. Food is outstanding. Big portions at a good price. They use quality ingredients. The chilli is hot. Really hot. If you can't eat a madras style don't bother. Chips are proper chips. Large ale selection and plenty of keg and real cider.

As it is off the busy city centre is not as busy as other pubs in York. They have a great selection of beers, crafts and stouts. Reasonably priced and great service. Only unusual was that there was no music or any background sound, so if it was empty it felt dead silent. But it might be a one off thing, but unusual for Saturday evening.

We first visited this pub 31 years ago. Always a good selection of well kept beers. Food is well priced and portions huge. The chilli is properly hot! Service is always excellent. I just hope then when it is sold the new owners do not try and change too much.

Pub handily situated between the railway station and city centre. A cracking range of real ales perfectly kept and dispensed by happy knowledgeable bar staff. My wife confidentially proclaimed the toasted cheese and bacon sandwich as the best she'd ever eaten. The homemade chips were also pretty damn good. Run by the same couple for 31 years so they know their stuff. Worth missing your train for

I read a previous review about how good the chips were....and I wasn't disappointed. Ham,egg and chips was a monster of a meal for just 12 quid. The food, staff and general place were excellent. I'll have to call in for food and a proper drink when I'm not driving.

Great pub. Has a local feel and traditional feel. Great food menu, good, honest home cooked food. Recommend the chilli and chips with added cheese. A healthy heat kick and the portions are large. Sit down and enjoy!

Stopped at this little pub during a daytrip to York and were very happy. Staff was very friendly and got around to us quickly during rush hour. Pints were good, but food was also quite good. Chips and Cheese were delicious, with the chips clearly home made. Decor was quite nice too! Proximity to train station is also a good bonus. Would recommend a visit.

The pub itself was fine. Very friendly bar staff. We only stayed for one drink. The doorman who was on duty, well he was a different matter. One of our party criticized his creased trousers and he must have taken real offence to this because he radioed to all the doormen in York to have us barred from most of the pubs. Actually had us put on pub watch! Have to say the food that we saw being served to other people looked amazing.

Such a gem of a pub. Much brighter inside than the outside and photos lead you to believe. Staff couldn’t be more helpful. Made small portions of food for our child, helped us find a great spot to sit with plenty of space for pram, brought colouring and crayons spontaneously, helped lift pram in and out of pub without being asked. Honestly, not had such great naturally friendly customer service for a very long time. And just after getting off a train, felt like Yorkshire is full of welcoming friendly people (which it is!). Great selection of drinks on tap, and food good too.

Beautifully warm and cosy on a cold winter day. Quite small, so fills up very fast. Absolutely cracking ales - ranging from great low priced bitters to top notch craft ales (you will pay for these, mind). Always loved this pub.

🤩 nice bar man looks like he could do with a bath in bleach and hasn't seen sunshine since 1600. We asked if there was music and he informed us we could leave... Shocking revelation we thought we were hostages at this stage we must admire his witty humour and poised demeanour... Absolute legend this guy is, I imagine he collects employee of the month awards month in month out and absolute asset!

Brilliant, delighted to have been here, charming staff, excellent ale and fine ambience. 31-01-24 Fantastic Black Sheep Bitter, great staff, and prices excellent (£4.40/pint). Was very quiet, so atmosphere not applicable, but everyone friendly.
