Well this was a rare find… last year when we first went to York.
So upon our return trip this year during the Easter Monday week we decided to try here again for our evening meals.
Absolutely fantastic place!
Now it can be busy on a Wednesday after 5pm (due to the free bottle of wine with purchase of two steak meals) but was well worth it for the meals alone.
When ordering they ask you for any allergies. There is a QR Code you can scan and search their website and whatever your allergy, once selected it removes all meals from the menu that have that allergy. Most efficient. But the added benefit is the staff have no issues with asking the chef if you wish.
Three nights running we came here and was never let down with the quality and quantity. Actually on the Wednesday we got there at 4:45pm and upon giving our order the guy told me to wait until 5pm for the wine bottle offer. He could easily have taken our order and not bothered but the service was excellent.
Highly recommend the steak, gammon and lasagne.
Overall one of the best places to eat in York that is very reasonable on price without scrimping on quality and quantity.
My recent experience at The Hole in the Wall restaurant in York left me with mixed feelings. The food, while acceptable, didn't quite live up to my expectations. The menu offered a decent variety, but the execution fell short of delivering a truly memorable culinary experience. It was satisfactory but didn't leave a lasting impression.
On a positive note, the restaurant maintained a commendable level of cleanliness, contributing to a comfortable and inviting atmosphere. The well-kept surroundings added to the overall dining experience. The service was a standout aspect of my visit—prompt, friendly, and attentive staff made the meal more enjoyable.
While The Hole in the Wall might not be a gastronomic destination, it serves its purpose for those seeking a clean environment with reliable service. The overall atmosphere was pleasant, making it suitable for a casual outing. If you're in York and prioritize service and cleanliness over culinary innovation, this restaurant could be a suitable choice. In the end, my visit was a mixed bag, but the attentive service and cleanliness added a positive touch to the overall experience.
Very cool atmosphere. Good beers as well.
The staff was very friendly and welcoming. Got there when it first opened and it was quiet. Started getting busy within 30 minutes.
Popped in for a meal after reading the reviews. The menu is pretty standard pub fayre and I went for a giant Yorkie with roast beef and veg. It was all served red hot and all 3 plates were cleared which is a testament to the food as the wife and daughter are picky eaters. Value is good , atmosphere is not as lively as other places in town but sets a nice tone for the place. I thoroughly enjoyed visiting the Hole in the wall and will definitely return. It's a pity it's not dog friendly but it makes up for that with value, quality and a lovely historical surrounding.
I had the best mashed potatoes I've ever had in my life here. I was sad that they had run out of yorkshire pudding meals by the time my partner and I sat down, but we got the steak pies which were excellent! The mashed potatoes were SO good, my partner wished he ordered them over his chips hehe
The service for food and drink were both excellent! We very much enjoyed our time here :)
A very busy Sunday lunchtime was handled ever so well by the staff. The place was heaving and we had attempted to book in advance, but they don't take bookings - turn up and hope they have a table. We waited only about 10 minutes and were directed to a cosy corner seat for 5 of us. Your menus are on the table and then you order at a side-bar, next to the main bar, where you also pay up front for your order. All very efficient and it seemed to work well.
Our wait-time for food wasn't excessive and we were all very pleased with quantities and the quality when it did arrive. Good food, good atmosphere and a pleasant feel to the place.
Lovely staff, always eager to help with the wide range of beers available. Theres plenty to choose from menu, starters, mains with sides and desserts.
We chose just to have a few starters so opted for spicy Mexican nachos with pulled port, garlic bread and onion rings. All was tasty, hot and not over filling.
Had a lovely meal, chicken burger was amazing. The staff were all polite, the waiter we had was called Owen he was so helpful and nice. Will definitely be going back.
Lucy was our waitress for the evening and she was absolutely amazing! The drinks she made were brilliant and she was very warm & welcoming! Would definitely come back again!
I was impressed with the cozy atmosphere of the pub. The decor was warm and inviting, and the staff were friendly and welcoming. The highlight of the meal for me was the Yorkshire pudding - it was delicious and perfectly cooked. The portion sizes were generous and the prices were reasonable. Overall, I had a great experience at Hole in the Wall and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a cozy spot for a meal in York.
