We popped into the Winning Post in York for lunch with our dog. From the warm welcome to the delicious homemade fresh food cooked to order we had a good experience. The staff are friendly and genuinely go out of their way to make sure everything is good. We highly recommend this great pub and will definitely be calling in again next time we visit York.
We had a fantastic lunch, my vegan option which was the linguine dish was outstanding! Plus some Hell's Angels dropped by while we were there! Cool as! One of our favourite pubs in York. Always a pleasure, never a chore!
Very busy gastro pub and the kitchen were amazing at sending out cracking plates of food to hungry punters. I look forward to going again and trying something else. The chickpea burger with spinach pesto was stunning, great cottage pie, and the appetisers were very tummy and beautifully presented. We shared the brie filo parcels with pistachios and the arancini balls with a spicy tomato sauce and fiery Padron peppers!
The best pie I’ve had for a long time and the belly pork was super a proper pub 😀
Wow the food was out of this world.... portions were huge.. great service too
Absolutely fantastic random find on our visit to York.
The food was amazingly home cooked and some of the most delicious food I have had out and about for a long time. I had the chicken Thai green curry pie and chips and my wife had the haddock risotto.
Fabulous selection of IPAs and beers.
Very well priced food and I will be coming back again if I am ever in the area.
The table service and all the staff behind the bar were so helpful and friendly.
Easily a 10 out of 10 experience.
Tasty food. Super nice folks. Loved the black pudding bonbons.
Very popular in the local community. Food is five star. Good service. Dog friendly. You could see lots local residents come over at weekend. Will go back again.
Four of us enjoy a spur of the moment meal and drinks. All four of us devoured both the main courses and the desserts - that says it all. Good choice of meals for the two gluten-free eaters amongst us. We will be back. Highly recommended 👌
We went to the Winning Post for what on the outside was a pub and therefore pub food ....
OH NO! the best food I've tasted in years .... the starter special was amazing and the belly pork with all the apple extras was fantastic ...
Great food, lots of beers on tap, lovely welcoming staff and a fantastic venue for live comedy
Really tasty food, good value and great service. Took the grandkids and in all honesty, I was expecting another so-so pub meal but it exceeded my expectations. Would certainly recommend it.
We went here on Saturday, just 2 of us. Luckily we had booked as it was busy. We were seated very quickly and had drinks within 5 mins.
The menu is not huge which is good and there was a good mixture of dishes + a specials board. We decided to share a starter and dessert which turned out to be a good idea. For main I went for beef bourginion and my wife had stuffed chicken, wrapped in bacon. The portions are huge!! The beef was melt in the mouth and the chicken was cooked perfectly. The only thing we noticed was maybe a slight lack of seasoning but honestly that might be just us. Starter and desserts were again really good.
The service we received was the best we have had anywhere for a long time. If the managers are reading this please keep doing what you do to keep your excellent staff.
So Starter, dessert, 2 mains and a couple of drinks later and the bill was about £55.
We will be going again.
The Fish and Chips! Seriously the best we had our entire trip, and believe me, we sampled from London to Glasgow! 😂 Our other food (Risotto etc) was delicious also but the fish and chips were definitely the highlight by far. And sadly I didn’t get a picture! 😆
It’s our local but by golly the food went to another level last night! We had the turkey special which looked inviting on the chalk board but its presentation, matched by the taste, was all totally brilliant. Colour, taste and textures, they were all there. Accompanied by a nice bottle of (French) Malbec it was fantastic. Well done the chefs. I have bored a few people about it today. If you are staying in York the city pubs can be mobbed and impersonal but The Winning Post gives you that good food, a friendly touch, and also some great guest beers. What’s not to like.
Overnight stay in York with the family. After checking for places to eat, we decided on the Winning Post for dinner as it wasn't too far from the hotel.
So glad that we did! All of the food we had tonight was fantastic! And a nice pint to boot!
Looking for a place to eat and have a drink around York? Then don't hesitate in visiting Winning Post.
Love the Winning Post, been going since we lived opposite, over 30 years ago. The place has changed loads since then, the food is good, the function room is well setup as is the outside area. It’s still a pub though, with a bar area and some decent ales, cheers!!
Top notch food.
We went for Sunday lunch, and chose from the weekly menu (although the Roasts being served all looked very good).
We shared the Tempura Harrisa Cauliflower for starters which was excellent. We had Cod from the specials menu (bang on), and the Beetroot and Leek Risotto with grilled Goats Cheese for mains, and shared a Banoffee Pie for dessert.
Top quality food, great range of craft ales and spirits, friendly staff, and good value for money.
Would highly recommend as a great place for a meal out.
The food was very good, with very generous portion sizes. The pub is much larger than you would initially think with lots of seating. Very friendly staff who were on hand to provide drink top ups. I would recommend booking at the weekend. We will be going back again!
