Had the most enjoyable experience here a few months ago. The food was fantastic, the staff were so helpfully and the head chef was a delight. I will definitely book another table and recommend this restaurant to family and friends. Thank you to all the staff.

We have been to 29 States a few times now and have always been impressed with the food and service. It was so sad to hear how badly the restaurant had been affected by the floods this winter and so as soon as they were back open we booked a table. Noting they are running a Living Social deal of a two course meal and glass of Prossecco for 2 for £19.00 we bought this in advance. Returning to 29 States after their refurb we received a warm welcome from the staff. The decor and flooring looks fabulous and the whole place looks refreshed. The Living Social deal means you can order food from the menu upto a certain value and then pay the difference of you want a higher prices meal. Popadoms and dips were also included in the deal. The food is served with a modern touch. With elegant plates and classy bowls. The dips are the norm but the Popadoms are triangular and gives the impression it's that little bit different. The glass of Prosecco was delicious and not skimpy by any means (we ended up buying a bottle of it to go with our meal) The kids selection is either fish fingers or chicken nuggets both served with chips and under £3.00. Tom's had these before and they were really nice. This time he wanted to have the same as us (what he really meant was Naan, Rice & Chips). The starters were delicious Paul had Seekh Kebab and I the Chicken. For main I had the Chicken Chettinad and Paul Lamb Laal Maas. Forgetting the volume of food served we also ordered a Pulao & Saffron rice. The food was absolutley spot on. Appealing, pleasant to look at and absolutley delicious. They state its Indian Cuisine with a modern twist theme and it really is. The food is served with style and class with a taste to match. The staff are ever so friendly, the chef made an appearance and we left absolutley stuffed yet ready to return again soon.

We've just returned from yet another wonderful evening at our favourite Indian restaurant, 29 States of India - York, and honestly, we couldn't recommend it highly enough. Not only is the food authentic, tasty and constantly impressive, but the service and hospitality is second to none. Being Coeliac and therefore on a strict gluten free diet, it's not always easy to find safe and welcoming independent restaurants, however we wouldn't dream of going anywhere else now after several extremely lovely experiences, both as diners at the restaurant and as take-away customers. Service aside, the food really is very, very good - everyone we have introduced to this restaurant has agreed. I urge you to see for yourself! :)

Went to 29 States The Indian Kitchen on Sunday evening for a birthday treat. Boy was it a treat! The food is absolutely delicious. I find it difficult to eat spicy food, but the korma I had was just right for me. It was different to any korma I have ever had before and was really rich and creamy. The other diners with me equally enjoyed their meal too. The staff are fantastic and nothing is too much trouble. The chef came to talk to us to discuss allergies and was very knowledgeable giving helpful information on what would be best to have. A very enjoyable event all round.

Lovely atmosphere, very knowledgeable waiting staff who were able to recommend us starters and mains. We had the salmon and sea bass to start, which where both nicely spiced and delicious. For the mains we had the (sp?) chicken and the laal mas (sp again-was lamb anyway!) They were both lovely, fairly spicy, but we like that. The meat was beautifully cooked, particularly the lamb. Will definitely be back.

I have eaten here tonight whilst saying in York with work. Been staying at least weekly since April this year, eaten in a Humber of different restaurants and this is the best meal I've had! In fact possibly enjoyed the tastiest Indian dish in my culinary calendar and will definitely return. Small menu, not the usual predictable dishes on so all are obviously created fresh, with real expertise! See you again soon!

Ate dinner here last night and can whole heartedly recommend this restaurant. The vegetarian meals were delicious - paneer stuffed with raisins and mint, aloo ghobi masala with whole meal paratha. The scallops were also delicious.

Visited here on a Wednesday night. It was nice and quiet with only a few other customers there. We ordered some poppadoms, chicken tikka masala, matar paneer, rice and naan bread. All food arrived quickly and was delicious. The naan bread was lovely and fluffy and makes me want to learn to make my own at home rather than having shop bought! I would visit again when in York. Would recommend. Thank you for the lovely meal.

We came here for a last minute works meal. Having given the restaurant only 2 days notice the restaurant were more than accommodating for the 24 of us. Unfortunately we all arrived late as our meeting had overrun but the restaurant didn't mind which was appreciated The view is lovely overlooking the castle, and the atmosphere and feel of the restaurant was great. The staff did an excellent job serving all of us and did not miss or incorrectly serve anything, which is a real testiment. I would definitely recommend this place and would revisit in future. My lamb Rohan Josh was lovely but hotter than expected - so just be careful if you don't like things too spicy!

This is an overdue review of a restaurant I have visited numerous times with my friends. They are perhaps the best restaurant in the city when it comes to Indian cuisine, especially with the vegetarian options. My friend, a life-long non-vegetarian, always looks forward to their vegetarian menu, especially the Panchmel dal (highly recommended). The owner is a nice gentleman who is always very happy to see us. The chef does an excellent job with the delicious fare. Located opposite Clifford tower, it is just on the margin of the city centre, therefore easily accessible. Wish their amazing team all my best!

I've never tried Indian beer before, but this Cobra lager is pretty tasty. Started with the sea bass, and for my main I had lamb curry and garlic naan. Everything was crazy delicious. And in the picture of the beer, that's part of York Castle in the background. Dining with a view! 😍 And they have good prices too! Everything came out to about £30, which is really good for a drink, appetizer, main, and side.

Went to this restaurant tonight from when we walked through the door until we left service was first class. Restaurant very clean and comfortable. Food was one of the best I have had in an Indian restaurant for a long time so much choice and flavours. We look forward to our next visit.

First visited 2 years ago on a trip to York and found the food to be exquisite and the best Indian we’d ever tried! ( And there have been many!) 2 years on and we’ve eaten here twice in 3 days. I feel that speaks for itself! The food quality is amazing and the service impeccable. Takes Indian cuisine to a whole new level! Friendly accommodating staff and atmosphere. Wish we had such a great restaurant at home in Wales. Just hoping to visit again on our next York trip!

One of the best Indian food in the City of York, absolutely amazing. It beats most of the good Indian Restraunts from London. Right next to Castle Tower and close to river Ouse, this is a must go if you like Indian food. We had Chicken Lahori, Paneer Khurchan, Kakori Kebabs and few other items. They did pretty well with the breads and basmati rice too. Getting good food after a long day of touring York is a bonus. Must go!

Food is amazing here, Chicken lahori was wonderful with naan. No need to look any further if you are looking to have good Indian food In York. Could have been wonderful if it was a little more cleaner.

You know you might be on to something good when the restaurant has three Indian family's in dining. Humble decor yes, but the best Indian food I have ever had, very good value too. Tourists, Don't go anywhere else till you have tried here.

By far the best indian in York and some of the best Indian food I've ever had. Mixed veggie starter platter was amazing, lamb and chicken main course, meat cooked to perfection and the garlic and coriander naan was exceptional. Welcoming and attentive staff, excellent service and reasonably priced for the quality of food. Will definitely return 🌟

It’s a great Indian restaurant that serve nicely prepared dishes from starters and main curry dishes with very soft and freshly baked naan bread! The saffron basmati rice is a must try as it’s fluffy and light. Highly recommended and would visit again. Very good table service with social distancing measures!

The best Indian food I had in last 4 months. The gentlemen serving the food were amazing. They knew what they were talking about, had funny small talks with them. My wife was even served complimentary cucumber raita :) She loved it. Highly recommended. AND THE VIEW OF THE CLIFFORD TOWER MADE THE EXPERIENCE EVEN BETTER.
