Upon our search for interesting halal places to eat during our stay in York, we soon came to realise that our options were so limited. Which is quite unfortunate. However, this Korean BBQ place looked so tempting and i’ve always wanted to try it so we tried our luck and called up.
The owner was so lovely on the phone and said they didn’t normally serve halal meat however if we booked a table for the following night they would personally go and get some for us!! How lovely!? Who does that?
So we explained our dietary requirements and booked in excitedly for the following night.
The restaurant is off the main road and up and couple of flights of stairs so could possibly be a little tricky to get to but with the help of google maps, we didn’t find it too difficult.
Upon arrival we were greeted by the owner and his lovely little dog milo who is super friendly, my little one had a great time playing with him. If you are uncomfortable with dining with a dog around they are more than happy to take him away.
The restaurant is a small family owned business with what I believe is autentic korean food.
We were served the korean bbq with halal chicken and beef, a variety of banchan (sides) and dips. My dream of being in a kdrama grilling my own meat was making me excited at this point. You are given a grilling place and seperate tongs for raw and cooked meat.
Everything tasted absolutely delicious and I couldn’t fault it. I guess to get things perfect though, you would have to have some prior experience of how to cook your own meat.
If you’re not so comfortable with this, there is a giant menu of other things you could try. My elder daughter had the kimchi fried rice and said it was the best shes ever had!
Once we finished with our main we were offered the dessert menu, we saw an unfamiliar name “bingsu” and questioned what it is. When we were told it was a sort of shaved ice cream - we HAD to try it. We went for both the original and strawberry flavour. OMG OMG - think tasty snow melting in your mouth. The bingsu was so GOOD we went back to just to have it again after a couple of months!
Korean pancake was divine too.
Worth visiting even JUST for the bingsu! Trust me!!
Really enjoyable dinner with my wife. We dropped in looking for something fun, different and with fresh tastes. We were not disappointed. Good value, generous portions but most importantly great food with good service. Recommended and we shall be back!
Loved it here. Such a small and welcoming space to eat , the staff are so lovely and always ready to help. Amazing food I loved the experience of being able to cook my food. Does Korea proud. Also the little diner dog was very cute and friendly just adds to the amazing restaurant experience.Thank you.
Incredible, authentic, high-quality Korean BBQ. We adore this place and have dined here a couple of times now, and each time I leave, I am satisfied but depressed knowing it will be a while before I go back again! 🤣
If you've ever been curious about Korean cuisine just take the plunge and book yourself a table (crucial to pre-book as whilst they do accept walk ins, it is an intimate restaurant, only capable of holding around 30 people across 5/6 tables so it fills up quick) the food is superb and my words can't do justice to the flavours and textures you'll get to experience. A few notable entries are tteokbokki, the Bulgogi beef, and the crispy chicken (any flavour choice is a good one)
If for some reason you are still reading this, just go and book a table already, you won't regret it.
Popped in here just by chance, was trying to see a menu outside but a customer outside vaping heard us deciding on whether to go in and mentioned how good the food was. Sold!
Really pleased with everything we ordered, ended up ordering more after we’d had our main because we just wanted to try so much more! Really unexpected having to cook the meat yourself but also means we could cook beef how we like it. Was nice to experience something new.
As for comments about the restaurant in other posts, it’s a top floor restaurant in an old York building. We thought it was fine, snug and intimate.
Staff were so attentive and the food was great!
Our first experience eating Korean food and we weren’t disappointed!
Maybe have a menu outside so people can see the range of food you offer :)

My partner and I were visiting York and wanted somewhere to eat, we were going to visit and alternative venue but found out that it was cash only so came here and we wearnt disappointed!
Oshibi is a little bit tucked away but worth hunting down! It was a quiet night so it was just ourselves in the restaurant but it never felt awkward and the team were so welcoming, we were also greeted by a lovely small dog who was very sweet, well trained and would occasionally just come over and lie down near us. The staff checked a few times that we were okay with the dog but we love dogs and were more than happy for the company.
We looked at the menu and were told that they were doing a new offer also of an all you can eat bbq for £25pp, my partner and I both chose this and can't express how happy we were with the food. We were given plates of meat to start cooking as well as rice, dipping sauces, kimchi and pickled salad. Throughout the evening we were also bought hot dishes by the kitchen team such as fried chicken, kimchi pancakes, lettuce wraps with large thin slices of pickled raddish and fried dumplings. We had several more plates of meat and finished the meal satisfied.
Despite our better judgement (based on how full we were) we decided to try and squeeze in a dessert and went for the traditonal bingsu and honestly we don't regret a thing! We got the bingsu to share and it was so light, delicious and refreshing. Even my partner who is a picky eater enjoyed both the main and dessert and tried lots of new things!
I would confidently reccomend oshibi to anyone for their fantastic food and service.
Had a lovely dinner here. We went in for their BBQ buffet which was pretty good value for money and the food was pretty good too. The seafood was a bit bland but otherwise everything else was spot on. The service was really good, the staff were really friendly and helpful.
We go to Oshibi every time we are in York and are never disappointed. As soon as you walk in the door it feels like you are a part of the family. We chose to cook on the BBQ and were served the most delicious assortment of meats, vegetables and side dishes. Through the meal we were also brought some free surprise dishes like fried chicken and dumplings.
We cannot recommend Oshibi enough, and our one regret is that we can't come to York more often to eat there.
Was visiting York for the weekend with my significant other and wanted to show her something different to what she's used too.
Staff were very welcoming on Friday the 21st of January and the atmosphere of the restaurant felt like I was just dining out in someone's dining room which I loved. Much more relaxing than the usual restaurant dining experience. You almost feel at home here.
Highly recommend visiting for an evening meal or date night and be sure to book a reservation!
I highly recommend you also try the honey butter chicken. We had to fight over the final piece!
If I'm ever heading back to York, I will be heading back for more, no questions asked.
Delicious food, the right amount of spice for us. The food tasted very authentic, the stew looked a little oily from what I’m used too. But overall the food was fabulous and would recommend this little gem in York.
