Drakes fish and chip shop in York does very nice gluten free fish and they also do gluten free scraps as well and I really enjoyed it and I would recommend it to other people that eat gluten free
We had gluten free battered fish and chips, a lovely big pot of tea, we were given gluten free bread and asked if we'd like gluten free vinegar. The staff were really coeliac knowledgeable and made our evening REALLY pleasant. Nothing was too much trouble. We had a visit York booklet which we were looking at and were given free peas with our dinner, totally unexpectedly just because we had the booklet and they have an advert in it. Everyone was amicable and said cheerio when we left. Lovely food with Lovely staff
Was at Drakes yesterday lovely meal as always, friendly staff very attentive not rushed to finish meal been a few times when in the area would recommend.
Food and service was excellent. Wife enjoyed the gluten free batter and bread and beer!! Nice to have the option of all three for a change
The best fish and chips in York! Only grumble is, that the "downstairs" staff don't pay enough attention to the orders sent by those taking the orders!!! Tried to serve us cod instead of haddock and a MINISCULE (thimble sized) portion of tartare sauce for two people!!! Time to get real!!!
Loved the fish and chips today. Tasted really fresh, and got some tartar sauce which not every fish restaurant provides. If I had more change would have given a bigger tip .
Very good top quality fish and chips served with tea bread and butter for £9:95 good value
Friendly staff, gorgeous fish n chips, a lovely cup of tea and a decent price too, marvellous
Great fast service, fish chips & peas for us both. Great food. 3 staff on the way out said thankyou and have a nice day. Would highly recommended. Will be back.
Wow! What can I say! Best fish and chips in forever and the staff were awesome! At time of posting this me and hubby had 2 haddock and chips, the BIGGEST pot of tea, bread and butter (lush), curry sauce and mushy peas for just over £21.00 - AWESOME xxx
Lovely place! Staff was really friendly and attentive. They even served gluten free cod & chips!
Never fail to produce the best fish and chips you can get. Excellent service too
Excellent fish and chip shop!
I opted for the Fish Tacos with curry sauce. I must say, the curry sauce was the best I've ever had, so thick!
My family members really enjoyed the large haddock with chips.
I'll definitely be hitting this place up on my next visit to York!
Absolutely incredible.
Firstly, I am a big fish and chips person, I've trawled the length and bredth of the UK looking for the tastiest fish and chips, I've sampled from the likes of the Cods Scallops, the Rock, loch Fyne, murgatroyds and many others.
Having stayed in York, I was desperate to find somewhere that did good fish and chips.
This place popped up and I thought I'd trust the reviews and well, what can I say, they were right, this place is great!
Had a large haddock and chips with a side of mushy peas and curry sauce all in cost about £15 which isn't bad for the size of the portion, I shared with my partner.
Everything was fresh, cooked to order the staff were lovely and well the food was superb, the fish was flaky and battered well, the chips had a lovely amount of crunch but were nice and soft in the centre.
The mushy peas were perfect as was the curry sauce.
Everything tasted great and it really is on par with the big boys out there in the fish and chips realm.
Delicious and well worth a visit if you're after good fish and chips in York.
The only downside is there is steps into the restaurant but still, I'm sure the staff would help if needed, takeaway is what we got and it was perfect.
Lovely visit to Drakes fish and chip shop today. Great atmosphere, friendly staff and amazing food. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. The shop was very clean and tidy. I would highly recommend the hallumi fries and fish wrap :)
Nice fish and chips shop in the city centre.
Stopped in for dinner and decided to sit in the restaurant.
Tables are at the back in windowless rooms and we (mature couple) were seated in a small area with four children, across two tables. It’s definitely a destination for families.
We ordered scampi, which didn’t seem to be fresh. Chips were hot and golden.
Service charge was automatically added to our bill without anyone noting it or asking if we were ok paying it.
Stopped in for lunch. Met some locals that came into town to eat the fish and chips. We also had that and a burger and chips. Fantastic! Had a pot of tea also. Wow. Very good. We will return.
One of the best fish and chips I had in a long time. I was in York for 2 days and on both days I had fish and chips for dinner from Drake’s
The quality of the fish (scampi in my case) and chips is fairly good at Drake’s. Not the best you will ever have but certainly worth a visit. My main criticism is really the venue just not very enticing or relaxing. I suppose it’s a fish and chip shop but it could really do with sprucing up
Visit: 5 April 2024
Nice place with a helpful service.
Perfect place to taste fish and chips :)
Remember to leave some space for delicious orange brownie ;)
Clean toilets.
Delish batter on the fish and chips. Every thing was made fresh so it came to your table piping hot!
Visited at approx 1230 on Sunday 14th April. Asked for the biggest fish they do. I was given "The Jumbo". Absolutely perfect. It was huge. Service was great too. Thankyou so much to everyone there. I will definitely return in the near future.
Can't ratel this chippy highly enough. Dined inside and offered a free drink for my wife's birthday which was a nice touch from Drakes.
I still prefer the takeaway fish and chips wrapped up. It just adds that extra element to the flavour when unwrapped and eaten. We did both. If you are in York it's a must place visit to enjoy excellent if not the best fish n chips.
Drake's Fish & Chips in York: A Must-Visit for Seafood Lovers
If you're looking for the best fish and chips in York, look no further than Drake's. This family-run business has been serving up fresh, delicious seafood for over 30 years, and it's easy to see why they're so popular.
The fish at Drake's is always perfectly cooked, with a crispy batter and a juicy, flaky interior. The chips are also excellent, golden brown and perfectly fluffy. But the real star of the show is the mushy peas. They're creamy, flavorful, and the perfect accompaniment to the fish and chips.
In addition to the classic fish and chips, Drake's also offers a variety of other seafood dishes, such as scampi, calamari, and fishcakes. They also have a great selection of sides, including coleslaw, onion rings, and curry sauce.
The restaurant itself is clean and inviting, with a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. The staff is always happy to help you choose the perfect dish and make sure that you have a great dining experience.

Me and my grandma came in today as we visited York for the third time. We wanted to try this place for the first time around dinner time and we were unsure what would happen. We got introduced by two women who were super nice and we felt loved as we got seated as a table of two. We ordered two regular haddock and chips which was average time to cook and to be served. The atmosphere and scenery was beautiful and the food was AMAZING! The utensils are clean and the tables are also so organised for your seating. The staff care so much and ask if you’re okay and if you’re having any problems. Honestly, we are coming here again because the respect is spot on. Needs more notice!
Called in for lunch having read the reviews. Didn't fancy fish and chips so asked the waitress what else was good and I had the lamb butchers pie...top notch! Optional charge added which we were happy to pay and it did warn us on the menu. Lovely lunch!
Despite the queues out of the door on Good Friday, we waited and were very glad we did!
Some of the best fish and chips we've ever eaten, well worth the wait. The service was great and the staff were friendly, even though they were evidently very busy! We'll definitely be returning soon!

We stopped here on the recommendation of the Viking we met earlier. Okay The first impression from the outside is very modern and reminiscent of Glasgow, if I can write it that way. But anyone who goes past the counter and into the back will be surprised. This place also has a certain, typically English atmosphere. Different rooms in adjacent houses were connected very pragmatically. It can happen that the clearance height of doors is a little lower and some ceilings and floors are slanted. But it is precisely this fact that creates the ambience. This would be unthinkable here in Germany. This is also why we love being in Great Britain so much and would love to come back on our next vacation. Oh I almost forgot to mention: the food was delicious and plentiful. Thank you very much and greetings from Saxony
Was craving for fish and chips in york and drakes fish n chips was one of the suggested place. Ordered their regular haddock fish and chips + mushy peas The portion is big ! Couldnt finish all my chips. The fish was cooked perfectly. My friend ordered their tacos and was surprised by their portion as well. Both food were reasonably priced ⭐ Would really recommend this place if you want to have big portion of fish & chips ! Service wise was average as we were seated indoors and it was quite hard to get their waitresses attention. But overall, highly recommended 💯👍
Delicious Fish and chips. Not your standard menu. My son wanted battered sausage 😁
After looking at the menu outside myself and my son decided to give it ago. My son ordered the chicken burger, chips and slaw. I ordered the mini fish and chips. This arrived within the space of 15 mins.
The fish and chips were devine. Its the best fish I've had in a while. Proper fish and chips.
My son really enjoyed his chicken burger to. Also had two apple juices. Everything came to £29 which was acceptable.
The waiting staff were polite and came back to the table to make sure everything was to our liking.
We will definitely be going back in the next few weeks.
